After Benjamin West. The Death of General Wolfe. Late 18th century oil on canvas, 17 x 23¼"., in period frame, 22 x 28". When the painting was recently taken out of the frame to be cleaned, the Chetwynd crest was discovered on the back; it has been retained and affixed to the back of the frame. The Chetwynd Baronetcy was created on May 1, 1795 for George Chetwynd, of Brocton Hall, Staffordshire, who was Clerk to the Privy Council for many years.

The Death of General Wolfe was painted in 1770 by Anglo-American artist Benjamin West depicting the death of British General James Wolfe during the 1759 Battle of Quebec of the Seven Years' War, or the French and Indian War, as it is known in North America. Major-General Wolfe (1727-1759) lies mortally wounded in the foreground of the picture, being supported by his aides. He wears a red coat, a red waistcoat, red breeches, and a white shirt; his musket, cartridge box, and bayonet lie on the ground in front of him. The rest of his staff surrounds him while an Indian sits directly opposite. Dr. Thomas Hinde, wearing a blue jacket, is attempting to stem the bleeding from Wolfe's wounds. Wolfe later died in the doctor's hands.

It was unusual to depict figures in contemporary clothes, classical clothing being the norm in historical paintings. George III did not like the painting at first, considering the clothing undignified, but the beauty of the painting overcame his first doubts. West made an additional and nearly identical painting of the same scene for King George III in 1771. West's paintings of The Death of General Wolfe are currently in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, the Royal Ontario Museum, the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan, and at Ickworth House, Suffolk, England.

Estimated Value $30,000 - 50,000.

After Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743). Jean Charles de Watteville. Oil on canvas, of the Marqués de Conflans (1605-1670) who was appointed by Philip IV of Spain as ambassador to the Court of Saint James in 1660 when Charles II of England ascended the throne. His appointment did not last long, however, for he was involved in an incident which cost him his ambassadorship. On October 10, 1661, the French and Spanish ambassadors in London sent delegations to welcome the new Swedish ambassador, but the delegations became embroiled in a fight which resulted in dead and wounded, the Spanish having got somewhat the better of the French (Samuel Pepys noted the confrontation in his diary). Louis XIV was outraged and declared his intention to declare war on Spain if the culpable parties were not punished. Thus ended de Watteville's ambassadorship to the English court. In 1666, under the regency of Mariana of Austria, he was appointed ambassador extraordinary to Rome, where he participated in the negotiations for the defense of Franche-Comté, and in 1668, he became ambassador to Portugal, where he died in 1670. Shortly before his death, Queen Mariana made him a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece. This narrows the time he could have had his portrait painted wearing the Golden Fleece to 1670.

Canvas relined; 33½ x 25"; framed: 40½ x 32". Label on stretcher identifying the sitter as de Watteville. The half length portrait shows de Watteville wearing armor with lace chemise, brown cape, wig and the order of the Golden Fleece. The painting was executed by a follower of Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743), a French Baroque painter of Catalan origin, who was considered the most important portraitist of the period. He was famous for his portraits of Louis XIV and the royals of Europe. Fine condition.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 18,000.
Ex Stedelijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Bruges, exhibition catalogue, 14 July-30 September 1962, p. 47, no. 490.

Vernet, Horace. Military Camp. Oil on wood panel, signed "H. Vernet" at lower right, c. 1820-1840. 6½ x 5". Housed in the original 9¼ x 7½" gilt wood frame, in which it was purchased in the 1970s, but possibly not original to the painting. It was recently cleaned and varnished by Tatyana M. Thompson, a Sotheby's-recommended restorer in Santa Monica, California.

Émile Jean-Horace Vernet (1789-1863) was a French painter who was known for military subjects and for representing war in an accessible and realistic way. His depictions of Algerian battles, such as the Capture of the Smahla of Abd El-Kader and the Capture of Constantine were vivid depictions of the French army in the heat of battle. His patrons included King Louis-Philippe and Napoléon III. He also painted during the Second Empire and accompanied the French army during the Crimean War.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 10,000.
Purchased from Sotheby's, London, in the 1970s.

He would often paint the same Paris landmark in different seasons or in different weather conditions. He especially enjoyed painting Parisian streets on a cloudy day or as they glistened in the rain, bustling with pedestrians. Ludwig Bemelmans. Yolanda and the Thief. Gouache on paper and wood, 1945. Image size: 24¼ x 20½", matted and framed to 33 x 29" Bemelmans extended the design of the piece onto an ornate frame. It is signed/ dated in black on the frame's white-wood inset: at left, "'45" and at right, "Bemelmans." Frame has a few dings; a few nail holes on outside edges of frame where an extra frame was formerly attached do not show when the painting is hanging.

This piece was perhaps an initial design for a poster for the film "Yolanda and the Thief." A unique original painting by Madeline's beloved creator who, like so many others, gave Hollywood a whirl - briefly. Working with MGM's fabled Arthur Freed unit, Bemelmans' whimsical story for the film, starring Fred Astair and directed by Vicente Minelli, should have been a hit, but wasn't. Instead, it become a cult classic, involving con men on the lam, a fictional Latin American country, guardian angels, and a well-swindled fortune falling prey to love. In addition to writing the screenplay for the 1945 fantasy/musical/romance, Bemelmans also gave designing the poster a try. This is his attempt and although it never was used for the poster, it is as enchanting as any Bemelmans.
