Gandhi, Mohandas K. "Mahatma" (1869-1948) Preeminent leader of Indian nationalism in British-ruled India. He led India to independence, employing nonviolent civil disobedience, and inspired civil rights movements around the world.

Autograph letter signed ("MK Gandhi"), in pencil, 1p, 8 x 6½", n.p., Nov. 26 (19)33. To L. Smith-Pearce, Raikumar College, Raipur. (C.P.), whom Gandhi addresses as "Dear Friend," regarding speaking to the "boys" at Raikumar College. "Sgt Shiekla has let me see your note to him. If your boys know Hindi more than English I shd like to speak to them in Hindi. If otherwise, I shd gladly speak in English…." Fine. With typed transmittal envelope.

At the time of this letter, Gandhi was in the midst of a one-year campaign to improve the lives of the untouchables, whom he called Harijans (the children of God).

Helen Keller Signed Photograph (1880-1968) Author, political activist, and lecturer who was deaf and blind. Albumen photograph inscribed and signed, "With the kind regards of Phiz and of his mistress. Helen Keller. April 1903," 5½ x 3¾" photo on 8½ x 6½" mount. A photo of a youthful Keller and her dog. Imprint of Emily Stokes, Boston, on verso, and marked "Copyright 1902" in lower right corner of photo. Minor smudging to mount, but the photo is lovely. It was taken while Miss Keller was a student at Radcliffe College, from which she graduated in 1904.

Howe, Julia Ward (1819-1910) Poet, essayist, lecturer, reformer and biographer, best known as the author of "Battle Hymn of the Republic." She worked to end slavery, helped to initiate the women's movement in many states, and organized for international peace. In 1908 she became the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Autograph letter signed, 2pp, 7½ x 5", Boston, Jan. 17, 1876. Fine. Acknowledging a note of condolence upon the death of her husband, Samuel Gridley Howe, who had taken part in the Greek Revolution and was head of the Perkins Institution for the Blind. In part, "I am very glad that, in my dear husband's funeral services, the thoughts and emblems of victory overtoppled those of mortality. This best victory we may hope to share with him, in which the final rout of our physical powers is only the prelude to the immortal morning." One would never know that some 20 years earlier, she had written in her diary, "I have never known my husband to approve of any act of mine which I myself valued. Books--poems--essays--everything has been contemptible in his eyes because not his way of doing things."

Keller, Helen. Typed letter signed, 1½pp, on personal stationery, 10½ x 7¼", New York, Oct. 31, 1962. To Mrs. L.D. Thompson in Paris, Tennessee, pleading for funds for the American Foundation for Overseas Blind. In part, "Earnestly I believe that God uses each one of us to carry out His Divine Purpose. That is why I strive to live for the good of the sightless and for the elimination of the tragedy of blindness from the earth." Very fine. Written six years before Mis Keller's death and showing her extraordinary commitment to others.

Lightly faded but a compelling image.
