Lot 950
1909-S. VDB. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. CAC Approved. A nice red coin. Popular key date. This coin is, as expected, well struck for a first-year Lincoln Cent. In fact, there are no areas of the design that are not fully detailed, and the surfaces are aglow with frosty textured, coppery luster. An attractive example in its desirable MS64 Red grade (PCGS # 2428) .
Estimated Value $1,900 - 2,000.

1909-S. VDB. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. Lots of mint red. Nearly full red in appearance, other some residual mellowing to light brown, one wonders why this is designated Red and Brown. Sharp and essentially unabraded. Popular key date. Pop 779; 32 finer, 1 in 65+, 31 in 66. (PCGS # 2427) .

Lot 952
1909-S. VDB. PCI graded MS-64 Red & Brown. The obverse of this well preserved key is essentially full red and brown with diagonal wood-grain toning while an evenly mellowed reverse suggests that the coin may have once resided in a cardboard-backed album. The devices were struck with such force and energy by the dies that all design elements show clearly (PCGS # 2428) .
Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,600.

Lot 953
1909-S. VDB. NGC graded VF-20 BN. Nice even wear. An attractive specimen, the storied first design with V.D.B. along the lower reverse rim. This placement caused some negative responses. Later dies were made without the letters. Only in 1918 was a small "B" for Victor D. Brenner, the coin's designer, surrepticiously added at the left end of the truncation of Lincoln's shoulder.

It is comforting to know that Brenner (1871-1924) was still alive to see his good name (or at least, initial) restored to his artistic creation. Brenner is best known for this enduring Lincoln coin design, the obverse of which is the longest-running design in United States Mint history. Brenner's model of the 16th President had been picked by 26th U.S. President, Theodore Roosevelt, who had earlier posed for him in New York (PCGS # 2428) .
Estimated Value $500 - 550.

Lot 954
1909. PCGS graded Proof 64 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. Well struck. Only 2,198 struck. Widespread criticism of the V.D.B. initials' prominence on the first Lincoln Cents of 1909 resulted in their removal midway through 1909, the design's first year of issue. In 1918, Brenner's initials were restored, but only as a small letter "B" under Lincoln's shoulder, where they remain today. After an initial 1,194 Proofs were made with the V.D.B., a further 2,198 were struck following their removal (PCGS # 3304) .
Estimated Value $600 - 650.

1909-S, S over horizontal S. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. CAC Approved. Pop 184; 48 finer, 2 in 65+, 45 in 66, 1 in 66+. (PCGS # 92434) .

According to the Breen Encyclopedia, "We owe the Lincoln design to a coincidence. The Lithuanian immigrant sculptor Victor David Brenner developed an obsession with the martyred President, and during the years just before Lincoln's birth centennial he modeled portrait medals and plaques. These came to the attention of Pres. Theodore Roosevelt, and probably played a part in Brenner's winning a commission to portray him on the Panama Canal service medal. During the sittings, Brenner became a close friend of Roosevelt. The President confided in Brenner about his "pet crime'' (improving all our coin designs, favoring domestic artists above Mint Engraver Barber's mediocrity), and invited him to submit cent models."
Estimated Value $900 - 1,000.

1911. PCGS graded Proof 66 Brown. CAC Approved. Some red visible. Only 1,733 minted. Vivid coppery hues with warm reddish brown highlights. A satiny Matte Proof that displays an endless smooth field and physical strength. The strike is bold -- par for a date that is almost always found 100% needle-sharp. Judged from an aesthetic standpoint, this 1911 Gem Proof Cent is also possessed of much finer eye-appeal than most. Pop 14; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 3309) .

1916. PCGS graded Proof 65 Red & Brown. Well struck. Housed in a Secure Plus Holder. Only 1,050 struck. A wonderful example of this scarce Matte Proof issue. Subtle tan-red fields provide the perfect counterpart for the sharp strike with the reverse colors extending in to deeper subtle nuances. Almost pristine surfaces. Pop 51; 15 finer, 1 in 65+, 12 in 66, 1 in 66+, 1 in 67. (PCGS # 3325) .

Matte Proofs: Matte Proofs were struck in 1909-16. The types of coin designs in this period (Lincoln cent, Buffalo nickel, Mercury dime, etc.) did not permit the making of bright finish or brilliant Proof specimens. It seems that the face of the die touches almost every part of the planchet on the Victor D. Brenner cents, dulling the surface of even a polished blank. Proof coins of the series therefore were issued with a matte or sandblast finish.
Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,300.

1921-S. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Choice, lustrous and appealing. A scarce issue struck at the Mint in San Francisco. All 1921-S cents were coined early in the year, before a nationwide recession slowed business activity. Due to a lack of demand from banks, the San Francisco Mint still had in its vaults on June 30, 1922, some 15,493,230 cents awaiting distribution. Thus no more were coined here until the latter part of 1923. Pop 236; 40 finer, 1 in 64+, 39 in 65 (PCGS # 2535) .

1923-S. NGC graded MS-64 RB. Lots of mint red. Expanding on this, perhaps we should call it outstanding copper red color that beams across radiant, near-gem surfaces. Nothing like the general run of 1923-S Cents of this caliber, the strike is thoroughly convincing in all places, even where some weakness is usually found at some of the wheat kernels. Pop 56; 21 finer, 1 in 64+, 20 in 65 (PCGS # 2548) .

1936 DDO FS-103 (FS-016). PCGS graded MS-66 Red. CAC Approved. A blazing red coin. Unlike DDO 1 and DDO 2, doubling on FS-103 can not be seen well on the date. Doubling can be seen primarily on LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST. All three 1936 doubled dies are listed on the PCGS price guide. The 1936 doubled die is also listed in the Red Book, although it does not distinguish among the die pairs. Pop 4; none finer at PCGS for the variety (PCGS # 2650) .
