1838 N-3 R1. NGC graded MS-66 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. Lustrous bluish steel and light olive fading down from mint color with at least 20% of the original red remaining. Nearly flawless, only a few microscopic defects from perfect. These include a tiny planchet flake on the nostril (as struck), a few extremely tiny ticks on the cheek, and a very small nick between stars 12 & 13. M-LDS. The dies are heavily worn and lapped but the small dot directly above the normal center dot on the reverse is weak but still visible (called the "Colon Center Dot Variety" by John D. Wright in "The Cent Book"). The dentils from under the date to star 1 are "smeared" as always on this variety and several of the stars behind the portrait are missing their radial lines, but everything else is nicely struck. In the later die states this variety becomes increasingly difficult to attribute, and NGC incorrectly called it N-1 on their label. Our grade is MS64. This piece is superior to any of the examples in the famous Naftzger collection (our sale 2/1/2009) or those included in the Noyes photo census for the N-3 variety. Population 1; none finer at NGC.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
