Lot 2269
1906 Pattern Double Eagle. "Smithsonian Collection". NGC graded Ultra Cameo Gem Proof. Private issue struck in 2010 in 1 ounce 999 fine gold. In a fancy wooden box with COA.

Historic Note: The only Pattern struck in this year is the handsome Double Eagle designed by Charles E. Barber. Only a uniface trial piece of the obverse in copper and gold plated and a unique Pattern piece in gold were struck. They are both in the mint collection in the Smithsonian Institution.

This Private Issue piece replicates that Unique Pattern in fine detail, true to the original. On the obverse, a draped bust of Liberty to left, with liberty cap, on the band of which is LIBERTY; over cap, olive branch; around thirteen stars; below, 1906. The reverse depicts Columbia, standing, with head turned to left, holding a liberty pole in her left hand, the right resting on a sword; behind, an eagle standing to right, with wings upraised; behind Columbia are rays through which runs the motto IN GOD WE TRUST; below, fasces.
Estimated Value $1,600 - 1,700.
