1937 Goudey Thum Movie - Base Ball Series - Paul Waner of the Pittsburgh Pirates. 24 2x3" pages showing Paul "Big Poison" Waner slamming a triple. The Goudey Thum Movies (R342) baseball card set was released in 1937 by The Goudey Gum Co., Boston. Thirteen players were featured and Paul Waner was #10 in the series. Kids were encouraged to buy the whole series to "see how the Big Leaguers do it"; the players seemed to be moving as the pages were thumbed through. Light toning else fine. Estimated Value $250 - 350

Baer, Max. Black and white, 8 x 10 in. photo of Baer in a tuxedo inscribed and signed as World Heavyweight Champion to President Rodriguez of Mexico: "To President Rodriguez--a grand and great man - I enjoyed my stay very much / I hope I come to Mexico again soon. Sincerely Max Baer 11/20/34." Baer's blue ink ran out and he signed part of his last name and the date in black ink. Fine. Also included are two candid 7 x 5 in. photos taken during Baer's visit. After defeating Primo Carnera on June 14, 1934, Baer would hold the title for 364 days, losing to James Braddock in the Cinderella Man bout. Estimated Value $300 - 400

Dempsey, Jack and Gene Tunney. Dempsey (1895-1983) was heavyweight champion from 1919-26; nicknamed "The Manassa Mauler." Photograph handsigned and inscribed in blue ink, "Thanks Mary & lots of Luck From Jack Dempsey." The photo is in a presentation holder from Jack Dempsey's Broadway Bar and Cocktail Lounge in New York and signed above the photo on the cardstock frame. The date "3-5-54" is pencilled on the inside cover. A handsome photo of Dempsey with a young couple (the man is in unform) in his bar. Tunney (1897-1978) was heavyweight boxing champion from 1926-28; he defeated Jack Dempsey twice. Typed Letter Signed, one page, on personal letterhead, 10 x 8", Oct. 7, 1930. To Guaranty Trust Company asking for physical delivery of all his securities held by the bank. File hole and staple marks at top and filing stamp at lower left, not affecting Tunney's very large signature. Estimated Value $200 - 300

Guldahl, Ralph J (1911-1987) American professional golfer; he took the U.S. Open title in 1937 and 1938 and the Masters title in 1939, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1981. Book titled "Groove Your Golf" inscribed and signed, "Yours, for a better game, Ralph Guldahl 1940" on the inside cover, 6 x 4 in., 217 pp. The book was written by Guldahl with a foreword by Bobby Jones. Hagen, Walter (1892-1969) American golfer who won eleven professional majors, making him third behind Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods; he had 45 PGA wins in his career and captained the Ryder Cup six times. He raised the status of professional golfers and was instrumental in popularizing golf; in 1974, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Paxon Hollow Golf Club score card signed on the cover by Hagen, Johnny Beadle, Marty Lyons, and C[larence] Ehresmore. The club was in Delaware County, PA. A second score card, dated April 18, 1936, holds the scores for an exhibition game played by Walt, John, Toby, and Clarence and is signed by a witness. Accompanied by a contemporary newspaper article about the match in which Hagen is called "national pro golf ace," Beadle is identified as "home professional," Lyons as "Llanerch tutor," and Ehresman, as "Eagles Mere, Philadelphia's medal play champion." Hagen and Beadle, who partnered against the other two, each scored 73 (one over par), Lyons scored 75, and Ehresman 76. Estimated Value $500 - 1,000

Program for Official Pairing and Starting times Fifth Annual Rancho Santa Fe $3,000 Pro-Amateur Golf Tournament, Sponsored by Bing Crosby, signed in pencil on the cover by Horton Smith (1908-63), the first man to win the Masters Tournament (1934) and Ben Hogan (1912-97), winner of nine professional golf championships and one of only five golfers to have won all four major championships. Johnny Weissmuller (1904-79), the Olympic Gold swimmer and actor who first played Tarzan was attending the tournament and he also signed the cover. Estimated Value $400 - 600

Jones, Bobby (1902-1971) A lawyer by trade, Jones was the most successful amateur golfer ever to compete; nicknamed "Emperor" Jones. Biographical page from a vintage golf magazine signed and inscribed "With best wishes, Robt. Jones Jr." in black ink, c. 1930. The article titled "Bobby Jones" was written by Grantland Rice, who signed in black ink below his printed name; old tape repairs around the edges do not affect the bold signature. On the reverse is part of an article by Jones titled "Golf Concentration" with a photo of "Emperor" Jones teeing off in the practice round before the National Amateur Championship at Merion, Georgia. In 1930, Jones completed his Grand Slam at Merion Golf Club. Estimated Value $700 - 900

1936 Olympic Lamp & Ashtray. A brown glazed terra cotta lamp base in the shape of the German Olympic Bell, one of the major motifs of the '36 games used on many artifacts and printed items. Height to bulb socket (without bulb and shade) is 5.5"; round base diameter 3.25". With cord and an attractive custom made replacement shade. Uncertain if in working condition, but physically excellent. Also, a large heavy light blue glass ashtray with the '36 Olympic bell etched into the bottom; 4.5" square; height 1.5". Interesting Quintet of 1936 Olympic Memorabilia. 1) Circular tray in brass, 4.75" in diameter, having an embossed Olympic bell in center. Once silver plated, the plating now almost completely worn. 2) Small souvenir penknife, 5" long opened, one side with color image of a runner; marked "Germany" with spouting whale maker mark. Good condition. 3) Empty cigarette tin for "Olympia" cigs; very worn with damage. 4) Group of over 330 cigarette cards of the type used for albums so popular at this period. There are 39 pcs. of 4.75" x 6.75" pictures and the balance are 4.75" x 3.25". Mostly b/with with several in handsome color, captions on reverse. A superb photographic account of the games in period images. Lovely Pair of Porcelain Olympic Athletes. 1) A artistic art deco style rendition in glossy white porcelain of a nude male athlete in semi-kneeling position, holding a torch, resting on a rectangular base. Height 9", the base 3" x 5.5" and marked at bottom in blue "Herend Hungary Handpainted" with an incuse model number "5797". Of uncertain vintage, possibly modern. Very attractive, skillfully made and in perfect condition.
2) A torch bearing running male athlete in matte white porcelain on a base with Olympic rings, the torch with candle wick for lighting. Scarce Airship Hindenburg Pocket Knife. A three bladed folding knife, maker marked "Fr. Olbertz" and "Rostfrei Stainless Solingen Germany"; 3.25" long when closed. The case in Matte gray finish with a depiction of the Hindenburg in Olympic livery. These were likely sold on the airship, at airports and in better stores. Excellent condition.
