Barnard, Christiaan (1922-2001) South African cardiac surgeo who in 1967 performed the first successful heart transplant on a human being. Photo signed "Chris Barnard" in purple marker, 4¾ x 6½ in. With a typed letter whose signature has almost entirely faded, on University of Cape Town letterhead, telling an American man that he is enclosing "a metal-tip cannula which was used in the first human heart transplant operation to allow air to escape from the left ventricle of the heart before stopping cardiopulmonary bypass." Bohr, Niels (1885-1962) Danish physicist; awarded 1922 Nobel prize for his contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum mechanics, which would contribute to the development of the atomic bomb; renowned teacher and activist for nuclear arms control (from the 1940s). Photograph from a publication signed and dated "1-3-1960" two years before his death, 9½ x 12 in. A few edge chips at left edge, else fine. Estimated Value $400 - 600

Edison, Thomas (1847-1931) American inventor whose innovative work in electricity and communication laid the foundation for the modern technical age. Check signed as president of the Edison Botonic Research Corporation, 8½ x 3 in., West Orange, N.J., June 20, 1924. Drawn on the Savings Investment & Trust Company of East Orange and paid to WH. Hand for forty dollars. Fine; signed with Edison's usual beautiful signature. William Henry Handy was a member of Edison's personal research team and the developer of numerous inventions, including a type of plastic for phonograph records that eliminated background noises. Einstein, Albert (1879-1955) Physicist; winner of 1921 Nobel prize. Photo signed with his full signature, "Albert Einstein 1934", 7½ x 9 in. A three-quarter portrait of Einstein seated in a student desk. The ink has faded in the signature but it is still legible. The photo was sent to a professor in southern California with whom Einstein corresponded. Einstein moved to the United States permanently in October 1933. Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,500

Goethals, George W (1858-1928) U.S. Army officer and civil engineer, best known for supervising the construction and opening of the Panama Canal. Two typed letters signed ("Geo. W. Goethals"), both to J.S. Cullinan in Houston. The first is on his business letterhead, one page, 8½ x 11 in., New York, Nov. 2, 1925, regarding a trip to Texas "in connection with the Bay City situation and some work at Mercedes…." He also mentions harbor work in Hollywood, Florida, which he is considering. Very good; folds, a couple of rust marks from paper clips, and file notes at bottom. The second letter is one page, 5½ x 8½ in., New York, Feb. 3, 1928. Thanking Mr. Cullinan for "the beautiful floral tribute…sent to West Point [for] the last rites for my father…." Fine. In 1909 President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Goethals chief engineer of the Panama Canal. The Canal was completed in 1914, two years ahead of the target date of June 10, 1916. Schweitzer, Albert (1875-1965) Alsatian theologian, internationally-renowned organist, philosopher, and medical missionary; winner of the 1953 Nobel Peace Prize. Holograph envelope addressed in Dr. Schweitzer's hand to Alice Ehlers in Los Angeles and signed ("A. Schweitzer") in the holograph return address on the verso, from Lambaréné, French Equatorial Africa (now Gabon). Envelope is postmarked Dec. 1942 and was opened by censors. Schweitzer established the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné in 1913 and spent much of his life there. With an 8x10 in. print of Dr. Schweitzer. Estimated Value $150 - 200
