Byrd, Admiral Richard E (1888-1957) U.S. naval officer, pioneer aviator, and polar explorer best known for his explorations of Antarctica. Vintage photo signed ("R E Byrd"), 8 x 10 in., n.p, n.d. Small printed item affixed to verso notes that the photo is just before Byrd took off for the South Pole and that he is holding the flag and a stone from the grave of Floyd Bennett (who piloted Byrd on his failed attempt to reach the North Pole in 1926). With a first day cover signed by Byrd, commemorating his visit to Fullerton, CA, and an unsigned 8 x 10 photo of the admiral in uniform. Estimated Value $300 - 400

The Story of the Second Byrd Antarctic Expedition, New York, G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1935. Light toning; edge wear to dust jacket. With signed cover bearing cachet: "Delta Delta Delta JMU Sponsors Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd. Decatur, Illinois. April 18, 1931. Byrd Antarctic Expedition." Closed tear touches the "B" in "Byrd." [Four Explorers] Ahmundsen, Stefansson, Hillary, and Norgay. Roald Ahmundsen (1872-1928) Norwegian explorer who discovered the South Pole and the first undisputed expedition leader to reach the North Pole; he disappeared on a rescue mission. Large, bold pencil signature on a toned 6 x 4 in. album page; Dec 16-1925 is penciled in another hand at lower right. Vilhjalmur Stefansson (1879-1962) Canadian Arctic explorer and ethnologist. Signature on a 5¾ x 5½ in. toned album page with a small newspaper picture attached. Sir Edmund Hillary (1919-2008) New Zealand mountaineer, explorer and philanthropist; on May 29, 1953, he and his Nepalese Sherpa, mountaineer Tenzing Norgay (1914-1986) became the first climbers confirmed as having reached the summit of Mount Everest. Signatures of both men on a 3½ x 2¼ in. piece of ruled paper. Estimated Value $200 - 250
