Starting in 1878, many things changed at the Mint. Proof production of minor coinage increased to two to three times the previous year's mintage. The actual mintage of minor Proofs were now recorded with accuracy. The Mint's minor coin production was based more on expected demand than actual demand. The many unsold examples were sold in bulk to local coin dealers at or near face value. Also starting this year planchet production for minor coinage was shifted from the Mint to outside sources. The quality of Proof coinage improved. Estimated Value $500 - 600

U.S. Proof coins were prized by the earliest American collectors and interest in them was high throughout the 19th century, particularly in the latter half. The purchasing power of money was higher than at the present and incomes lower on a relative basis. After Proofs were offered to the general public in 1858, well-to-do collectors sought Proofs of the silver coins, and a few collectors of outstanding wealth such as the Garretts of Baltimore sought Proof gold.

From the mid-1860s onward, the Philadelphia Mint offered collectors on more limited budgets Proof sets of the minor coins only, such as the Small Cent, 2 Cents, Nickel 3 Cents and 5 Cents. These sets were popular among the few hundred collectors then active, but well-preserved minor Proofs are every bit as scarce as top-condition specimens of the silver and gold, and with them form an important part of the American numismatic record. Estimated Value $750 - 850

1886. Variety 1. PCGS graded Proof 65 Red. CAC Approved. Medium mirrors. Outstanding eye appeal and a very scarce date in full red. Opinion has it the Proof 1886 Variety 1 is slightly more rare than the Variety 2 from an absolute standpoint, high grade examples are rare, especially when the original mint luster is intact. Which leads to the main point: this richly colored Variety 1 is an attractive coin, one that displays a cheery full-red sheen whose color saturation deepens every so slightly around the reverse periphery. Both the strike and the surface preservation are worthy of a round of applause. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Only 4,290 struck. Pop 19; 12 finer in 66. (PCGS # 2347) Estimated Value $1,850 - 2,000

1897. NGC graded Proof 66 Red. CAC Approved. This is a stunning example with deep mirrors and frosty devices. Graded prior to NGC giving the "Cameo" designation to Proofs. This has beautiful "Orange-peel" fields. Orange-peel is seen on gold and copper coins in areas where they have highly polished mirrors. The effect is caused by the high annealing tempurtures used to soften silver and nickel planchets. When used on copper and gold, the too-high oven setting tends to crystalize the metal giving it the look of galvanized steel. To collectors of Proofs, it is highly desired. Housed in an Old Style Holder. Pop 2; none finer at NGC. Estimated Value $1,750 - 1,850

1899. PCGS graded Proof 66 Red. Beautiful deep mirrors with watery "Orange-Peel" fields. Frosted devices. This was graded prior to the "Cameo" designation being given by PCGS. It certianly deserves it. Only 2,031 struck. Pop 22; 10 finer in 67. (PCGS # 2386)
In reference to the term "orange peel" fields, after coining dies are hubbed and the date is applied, the die is given multiple polishes with progressively finer and finer polish. The last polish given to the dies prior to being hardened gives the field a surface much like a mirror. This is the deepest mirror attainable on the dies. When the die is hardened, the metal shrinks to some extent creating a wavy effect on the polished surfaces. It looks somewhat like the surface of an orange. When you see orange peel on a Proof Indian Cent issue you can be sure that it is one of the first examples struck from those dies. Later polishing to the already hardened dies will produce a flatter and shallower mirror. Estimated Value $750 - 850
