Lot 2519
1908-S Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-65 Red PQ CAC Approved. Well struck and sparkling with brilliant Mint Red color. A nice looking coin. Includes Eagle Eye Photo Seal. This is an arguably well produced example of a low mintage (1.1 million pieces), semi-key issue. The coin blank was well prepared with the result that the surfaces display beautiful (and even, not sometimes seen wood-grained) reddish-golden hues. Other than the top four feather tips, there are virtually all sharp features, and we are happy to report complete freedom from spotting on either the obverse or reverse. The San Francisco Mint pair six obverse dies with five reverses to produce this issue. Pop 206; 38 finer with 2 in 65+, 36 in 66 (PCGS # 2234) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,200.

Lot 2521
1909-S Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-65 Red CAC Approved. Brilliant and untoned. A gem Mint Red example. A brilliant, lustrous, and in fact, goregous specimen of the last year of the Indian cent series. One of the lower mintage issues of the type. Well struck and of a pleasing appearance.

It is an elegant state of affairs to have a 1909-S Indian to represent this design type, what with a mintage of only 309,000 pieces, when something common could have been selected instead. Accordingly, the present piece will probably appeal more to the Indian cent specialist, who will recognize this as a particularly nice example. Pop 138; 15 finer with 14 in 66, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 2240) .

Comments: The 1909-S registered the lowest recorded mintage of any issue in the Indian cent series, a fraction of that of 1877. However, by 1909 there was a more developed numismatic awareness and more specimens were saved, so today a Mint State 1909-S is more available than certain earlier dates. However, Gem pieces that haven't been dipped or cleaned are indeed elusive.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.
