1826/5 N-8 R2 Overdate 6 over 5 VF30. Choice glossy chocolate and steel brown. Smooth and very nice for the grade, essentially flawless. A barely visible rim nick right of the date is the only notable mark. M-LDS. The overdate feature is visible and there is doubling on the profile as well as on parts of the legend on the reverse (from die bounce).

Lot 433
1827 N-5 R2 Double Struck G6. A point or two sharper but there are traces of minor roughness on both sides plus a few light scratches on the portrait. Slightly glossy medium brown with reddish chocolate and olive brown toning in some of the protected areas. Double struck. The first strike was normal and centered on the planchet. The second strike was 65% off center to K-12 on the obverse, K-6 on the reverse. The reverse was struck against the die on the second strike while the obverse was struck against a blank planchet creating an off-center brockage on the second planchet. Clear evidence of the off-center impression shows on the lower third of the reverse. Another obvious mint error.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

Lot 434
1827 N-6 R3 Double Struck G6. Glossy chocolate and steel brown. A dig on the right side of star 5 is the only significant defect. Double struck. The first strike was an off-center obverse brockage. On the initial impression the obverse was struck with the die about 15% off center to K-5 while the reverse was struck against the obverse of a previously struck cent leaving an incuse impression of the obverse about 30% off center to K-2. The cent was then reinserted into the coining chamber and struck normally. The bust of the first strike is visible at the date and TY from LIBERTY shows under the hair bun. Ample incuse details from the brockage impression show on the lower half of the reverse, including several stars and a long arc of incuse dentils.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

1827 N-7 R3 EF40. Sharpness mint state but the obverse fields have been skillfully smoothed, the work nearly undetectable. There is shallow reddish crud hidden in the hair curls and traces of similar crud in the dentils at stars 10-13. I suspect the smoothing was done to remove a bit of stain from the fields. Frosty steel and chocolate brown. Sharply struck EDS. The reverse is lustrous and very attractive. Worth a close look.

MDS with a fine die crack from the ear down to the rim between the 1 & 8 in the date.

1828 N-11 R2 NGC graded MS61 Brown. Frosty light steel brown and tan with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. The only marks are a dozen or so microscopic specks of light greenish debris scattered over the reverse (careful conservation may be justified). Nicely struck EDS. The bold repunching left of the first S in STATES and left of the O in OF is clear. Our grade is AU50+. The attribution is shown on the NGC label.

Lot 443
Pair of Cents, 1828 and ? that were Double Struck. The first is an 1828 N-10 (Small Date) R1 AG3. Glossy chocolate and steel brown. This cent was double struck with a rotation of 65 degrees between the impressions. Doubling is visible on the reverse, especially in the center where ONE CENT shows two times overlapping at a 65-degree angle. The obverse, however, was struck against a new blank planchet during the second strike and it displays the usual swelling that comes with being a brockage maker. The second piece is a middle date cent (perhaps an 1825 but there is no date) that is smooth but very heavily worn grading no more than Basal State-1. Glossy chocolate brown. This piece has a well-defined tab double strike at star 6. The reverse side of the tab very clearly shows TAT from STATES while the obverse side of the tab was struck against a blank planchet. Might have been used as a pocket piece. Lot of 2 coins, both obvious mint errors.

1831 N-1 R1 G5. Double Struck Off Center. Several points sharper but the planchet is slightly rough and there is some hard green verdigris around stars 1-5. Cleaned and retoned steel brown and olive with underlying faded red. Not especially attractive, but it is a really near mint error. The first strike was normal and centered on the planchet, but the cent failed to eject completely from the coining chamber and was struck a second time about 85% off center. The reverse was struck against the die on the second strike leaving STAT at the bottom of the normal reverse. The opposing area on the obverse was pressed against a new blank planchet during the off-center strike, thereby blunting the dentils at stars 7 & 8 and creating an off-center obverse brockage impression on the new planchet. An obvious mint error that is easy to explain.
