1803 S-259 R4 F15. Ten points sharper but there are too many small contact marks scattered over both sides for the sharpness grade. The only notable mark is a rim nick at the first A in AMERICA. The surfaces are smooth except for a trace of very fine roughness at STATES-O, but there is no verdigris. Glossy chocolate and steel with a few small splashes of darker olive brown toning on the obverse. EDS, Breen state I. This is the plate coin for that die state in the Breen encyclopedia for early US Large Cents, page 727.

1803 S-259 R4 PCGS Genuine, XF Details, Cleaning. Glossy chocolate brown fading to darker olive brown and steel in protected areas. It does not appear to have been cleaned and retoned, but if so was minimal and the cent still offers excellent eye appeal. There are some very fine hairlines in the toning on the portrait and a light rim bruise opposite the chin. E-MDS, Breen state II early. The die crack through the top of STATE is clear but not strong. Our grade is VF25+ sharpness net VF20. At the lower end of the expanded condition census for the variety. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label.

Lot 323
1803 S-264 R4+ Large Date With Small Fraction PCGS Graded VF35. Rather glossy chocolate and olive brown with the devices a shade or two lighter than the protected areas. There are no significant marks and the eye appeal is quite nice for the grade. The surfaces appear perfectly smooth to the unaided eye, but a strong glass reveals traces of extremely faint roughness in the fields and protected areas, strongest at F-A where there is a collection of very tiny pitmarks. There is no verdigris and the only notable sign of contact is a fine, old pinscratch in the field before the lower half of the neck. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state II. (This is the earliest die state for the variety as Breen's state I can't exist as he described it.) Called VF25 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #21235. This is the plate coin for the variety in the Noyes book. Bland says VF20 and tied for CC#2 behind a slightly finer example. Our grade is Very Fine-25. Ted Naftzger's envelope notes in his handwriting that this piece is the "Earliest State" and that this example was unknown to Dr. Sheldon. The note goes on to explain how Ted obtained this cent. "2/15/75 at EAC/NY, I exchanged my 1801 NC-1, VF-35 x-WHS (Dr. Sheldon), even money; with DWL (Denis W. Loring), who had obtained this S264 from the Great Shal (Dr. Robert J. Shalowitz)." Then on the back of the envelope flap he added above the notation of a prior owner that this cent is the "Prop of the Great Shal" his own comment "formerly/TEE HEE". Ted had a nice sense of humor. This is one of three examples of the famous Large Date with Small Fraction variety tied for finest known honors, and all three of them have imperfect surfaces. Of the three, this piece appears to have the fewest imperfections. An extremely important example of this rare "Redbook" variety. PCGS population 1 with none finer.
Estimated Value $75,000-UP.

1809 S-280 R2 Double Struck VG8+. Turban Head. Glossy chocolate and steel. Close to VG10, especially on the reverse. This cent was boldly double struck. The first strike was normal and centered on the planchet. The second strike was also centered on the reverse but rotated about 10 degrees clockwise from the first impression. As a result, the legend reads UNITED STATES OFMERICA. The second strike on the obverse was against a new blank planchet positioned 20% off center to K-7.5 creating an off-center obverse brockage on the second planchet. 1811 S-287 R2 Flip-Over Double Strike G6. Turban Head. Glossy chocolate brown with traces of crud and minor roughness on both sides. The obverse is slightly better than the reverse due to the way this piece was struck. It was struck at least two times and flipped over between impressions. STA from STATES is visible above the head just left of star 8. The reverse, however, shows no trace of having been struck by a die more than once. Instead the reverse is heavily bulged suggesting it was struck against a new blank planchet (perhaps more than once given the severe bulging, similar to a capped die strike) creating a reverse brockage. Another very interesting mint error from the Carvin Goodridge collection.
Estimated Value $50-UP.
