1797 S-139 R1 Double Struck PCGS graded VG8. The obverse is slightly nicer than the reverse which shows shallow dark scale on all but the highpoints. Rather glossy steel brown and chocolate with dark steel in protected areas. This piece was dramatically double struck. The first strike was 20% off center to K-4.5 and the second strike was centered on the planchet but rotated 60 degrees clockwise relative to the first impression. LIBERTY from the first strike shows clearly behind the head of the second (centered) strike. Similarly AMERICA from the first strike shows at the bottom of the reverse. An impressive mint error that does not require a glass to appreciate. Our grade is Good-6. The attribution and Carvin Goodridge provenance are shown on the PCGS label.

1798/7 S-150 R5 Style I Hair, Overdate 8 over 7 G4. 1800 S-211 R3 AG3. Flipover Double Strike. The obverse details are slightly better than AG3 showing a strong date and complete LIBERTY, but the reverse is weaker. Maybe a third of the reverse devices remain visible. The obverse is glossy chocolate brown but the reverse was lightly cleaned and has retoned a mottled mix of light olive, steel brown, and chocolate. LDS with a die crack through the base of the first 0 in the date. Double struck. The first strike was slightly off center to K-12. The planchet was then flipped over and struck a second time, this one properly centered on the planchet. The best evidence of the first strike is TED from UNITED on the bust tip, the D strong but the other 2 letters weak. There is no evidence of two strikes on the reverse, so it is possible that side was struck against a blank planchet during one of the strikes.
