Mene, P.J. A Working Horse. Bronze sculpture signed on the base, which is 6 in. wide x 14 in. long. The horse is 10½ in. high by 11¼ in. long. Weight is 17 lbs. 3 oz. Pierre Jules Mene (1810-1879), was a French sculptor. He is considered the pioneer of animal sculpture in the nineteenth century.

Russell, Charles M. Will Rogers. Bronze sculpture of the humorist Will Rogers on horseback signed by the artist on the base, along with a steer skull. 11 x 10¾ in., mounted on oval marble base. Weight is 15 lbs. 6½ oz. Russell (1864-1926) and Rogers (1875-1935) were friends. Rogers called Russell "the only painter of western pictures in the world that a cowboy can't criticize."

Areno, Joseph. Santa Barbara Harbor. Oil on panel, 16 x 12 in. Signed at lower right and again on the back. Also in Areno's hand on the back: "A north coast boat 'Challenger' Santa Barbara Harbor" with Areno's red, wax seal.

Joseph R. Areno (1950-2006) was born in Montreal and studied in schools and studios in Montreal, Paris, New York and Santa Barbara. He is known for figurative life drawing and painting, portraiture, landscape and cityscapes. He worked in oil, charcoal, pastel, and watercolor. His work reflects daily life and experiences, much of it in Santa Barbara.

Lawrence, Susan. Godmother's Words. Oil on wood, 30 x 30 inches. Susan Lawrence's recent work focuses on the White mountain Apache Tribe in northern Arizona, specifically the Coming of Age Ceremony of the teenage Apache girls. This three-day ceremony which involves prayer, dance, and inner strength is life changing and signifies the transition from to woman. Her relationship with this tribe covers almost eighteen years and her friends there have allowed and trusted her to join them in honoring their daughters on their journey into womanhood. This is one in a series of eight portraits that reflect these experiences.

Post, Charles Johnson. (Wounded Soldier and Three Soldiers - Unfinished Sketch). Two watercolors: One of a wounded soldier, 11¾ x 9 in., signed at lower center, matted and framed to an overall size of 19¾ x 17 in.; the second is of three soldiers going up a hill (San Juan Hill?), with unfinished background, 11 x 10½ in., signed at lower right, matted and framed to an overall size of 19 x 18½ in. Both are scenes from the Spanish American War. Accompanied by the July 7, 1958 issue of LIFE magazine which has an article on Post. p 52-61.

Charles Johnson Post was born in 1873 in New York City. He studied at the Art Students League in New York City under John Twachtman, Kenyon Cox, J. Carroll Beckwith, and Harper Pennington. Post enlisted as a private in 1898 with the 71st New York Infantry, U.S.V., which served with a regiment of the Fifth Army Corps. Post served as an illustrator for the Army and contributed a series of sketches from the Spanish American War in and around Siboney, Cuba in 1898.

Depicting a small boat in a cove, a lighthouse behind it, and seagulls circling above. Neumann (1891-1985) was a German artist known for painting beach scenes, seascapes, and farm landscapes.

Millet, Jean-François. La fileuse, cheuvrière auvergnate. [The Spinner, Goatherd of the Auvergne], 5 x 7¾ inches on 10¼ x 13¾ inch paper, c. 1868-69. A peasant woman in the field, spinning, her goats visible behind her. Signed "J.F. Millet" in the plate at lower right. French artist Jean-François Millet (1814-1875) was one of the founders of the Barbizon school. The son of peasants, peasants were his favorite subject matter.

Hartung, Hans. Fond Mauve. Etching, 20¼ x 14¾ in., handsigned in pencil at lower right and numbered in pencil 48/75 at lower left. Framed to 20½ x 27¼ in. Hartung (1904-1989) was a German-born abstract artist who studied in Dresden and Munich before moving to Paris, where he had his first solo exhibition in 1947. He won the International Grand Prix for painting at the Venice Biennial in 1960. The owner purchased this piece approximately 50 years ago from the Esther Robles Gallery in Los Angeles, which was in operation from 1947-1979.

Newton (1878-1964) was a lithographer and landscape painter whose work is in permanent exhibits in the New York Public Library and the Metropolitan Museum Of Art. A native of Michigan, she attended the Art Students League in New York and the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. After moving to New Milford, Connecticut, she found inspiration in the old farmhouses there and often depicted their interiors in her artwork. Descended in the artist's family.
