The portraits on the later Lycian staters are perhaps the finest numismatic examples of the Classical period. And they came to be so in a natural and logical progression. Lycia was one of the first coin issuers to depict its rulers. Early issues utilized an idealized portraiture, while over the next half a century, Lycian celators moved toward realism. This trend would reach its pinnacle during the reign of Perikle, while simultaneously imbuing touches of idealism. Here the portrait is placed on the obverse, while instead of using the traditional profile, the artist uses a dramatic facing portrait clearly borrowing from Syracusan coinage. The sum depiction of the dynast is very realistic, here is Perikle the man. The arrangement of his hair, free flowing in a somewhat celestial nimbus, though, hints at a demigod. Useful propaganda for a dynast!
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.
