1850 N-15 R1 EF40. Ten points sharper but there is some roughness around UNITE. No verdigris, and the roughness may be pre-striking planchet chips rather than environmental in nature. Lot 550
1850 N-24 R4+ VF20. Sharpness EF40 but cleaned and retoned glossy light olive and chocolate brown. No verdigris or notable signs of contact, but there are shallow voids above stars 6-9 and similar but deeper voids between much of the reverse legend and the dentils. These voids were caused by planchet slag, and traces of the dark reddish impurity remain in several of the voids on the reverse. Similar slag-caused voids have been found on several varieties of 1849 large cents as well, but this is the first reported for an 1850. A very odd type of mint error that just happens to be on a tough die variety.

Lot 551
1851/81 N-3 R1. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Beautiful frosty mint red fading to steel brown, about 50% of the mint color remaining intact on the obverse and 85% on the reverse. Sharply struck and very attractive. The only marks, and they are trivial, are traces of an old fingerprint in the field above the head, a couple very tiny nicks on the rim over stars 6 & 7, a tiny planchet flake in the field under star 10 (as struck), and microscopic specks of darker steel brown toning scattered over the reverse (visible only with the aid of a strong glass). Struck from the highly desirable early state of these dies, Grellman state a, showing bold repunching on the date creating what we call the 51 over 81 overdate. Actually the date was punched into the die inverted, then corrected. The field around the date is covered with coarse die lines where a mint worker attempted (but failed) to efface the error. The inverted 18 shows clearly under the 51 of the normal date. In addition, on this early die state you can see traces of the inverted 51 under the 18 of the normal date. This evidence proves the entire date was inverted, then corrected. A premium example of this popular "Redbook" variety. Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#4 honors in the Grellman census.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.

1851 N-6 R1 Repunched 1's. NGC graded MS-66 Brown. Choice lustrous bluish steel and light olive brown with peeps of very faded mint color on both sides. The repunching on the 1's is gone and the die lines up from the coronet over LIB are weak. Our grade is MS63+, tied for CC#4 in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the NGC label.

1851 N-20 R3 Repunched 1's. NGC graded MS-62 Brown. Probably lightly dipped long ago, now toned frosty steel brown with lighter steel brown toning in protected areas. Hints of light bluish steel and sea green overtones can be found in the protected areas and some slightly darker reddish brown toning shows around OF AME. The only marks are a nick on the nostril and a collection of barely visible planchet flakes on the jaw (as struck). Scarce EDS, die state a. The multiple repunching on the 1's is clear and the diagonal die lines behind the date are visible. Our grade is AU50 sharpness net EF45. Not in the overall condition census for the variety but one of the finest of the early state. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. And this relatively modest cent comes with a provenance that is anything but modest.
Estimated Value $200-UP.

1855 N-9 Slanting 5's, Knob on Ear. NGC graded MS-63 Brown. Lustrous light to medium chocolate brown and steel with a substantial spot of reddish chocolate toning in the field right of the inner curl. Peeps of faded mint red can be found on the reverse. The only marks other than the spot are microscopic and insignificant, but the red spot does catch your eye. Nicely struck EDS but not the earliest, Grellman state b late or c early. There are numerous spidery die cracks in the hair under RTY down to the top of the ear, but the "Knob" break is not clearly defined by these cracks. The die cracks are sharp. In addition, the obverse fields are covered with fine die polishing lines extending NNE to SSW while the reverse fields show similar but less obvious polishing lines from NW to SE. Obviously these dies were nearly new. (FYI, die state a showing no die cracks at RTY is unknown.) A sharp example of an interesting die state of this popular "Redbook" variety. Our grade is AU58+, very close to MS60. And it comes with a nice provenance.
Estimated Value $400-UP.

1837 Hard Times Token Low-19, Rulau HT-33A (Rarity-5) AU50. Frosty medium brown. No defects, only very light friction on the highpoints. A popular political type that circulated as a cent. Late die state with dentils rather than border beads around each side. Rulau calls this a different variety (HT-33A rather than HT-33) because of the change in the borders, but Schuman and Low list it as the same variety.
