Lot 439
1823 Restrike. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Attractive glossy medium brown and chocolate. The fields are slightly reflective thanks to a fresh die lapping that left behind faint die polishing lines in the fields on both sides. A small spot of reddish chocolate toning in the field off the nose tip is the only mark. Very nice, close to choice. M-LDS with an additional die crack from the dentils left of star 1 to the chin and cheek where it meets up with the earlier bisecting crack. The obverse rim cud now reaches to over star 7, and the cud break is especially strong on this example thanks to being struck slightly off center to K-4. In fact, the cud was lightly smoothed along its outside edge in an attempt to make it appear more "normal." The earlier reverse die crack now clearly extends across that side to the rim at the R in AMERICA. Breen says pieces in this die state were struck beginning in 1879. Noyes photo #39278. Weight a hefty 176.0 grains. Our grade is MS62.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.

Nicely struck E-MDS, without any crumbling in the obverse dentils. The overdate feature is obvious.

1825 N-1 R4. NGC graded EF-45. Glossy chocolate brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and frosty lighter golden brown in protected areas. Struck slightly off center to K-12. This was the finest example of the variety offered in the famous Jules Reiver collection, and his provenance is noted on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.

1825 N-10 R3 G5. Double Struck over Off-Center Obverse Brockage. Mostly glossy steel and chocolate mixed with olive brown in protected areas. The surfaces are decent but not perfectly smooth under magnification. No marks or verdigris. Dramatically double struck. The first impression was an obverse brockage strike positioned about 65% off center to K-2. The second strike was normal and centered on the planchet. Strong, obvious evidence of the first strike shows on both sides. Much of Ms Liberty's profile hovers above and behind the centered visage while incuse stars and dentils from the off-center obverse brockage cover the lower right quadrant of the reverse. The second strike was rotated about 25 degrees CW relative to the off-center strike. A modest grade but a fabulous mint error.

1834 N-3 R7 (as a proof). NGC graded Proof 65 Brown. Variety with a Large 8, Small Stars, and Medium Letters. Beautiful gunmetal bluish steel and olive. Very sharply struck with needle-sharp details and deeply mirrored fields on both sides.
