Lot 394
1813 S-293 R2 Turban Head VF25. Sharpness EF45 but dark with extremely fine roughness under the frosty dark olive and steel toning. No verdigris. The only notable mark is a dull, thin scrape from star 4 to the ear, strongest on the cheek. Otherwise only a few microscopic marks of no importance. Latest die state with all the die cracks listed by Breen and a raised ridge around the entire reverse. The tops of OF AME are strongly merged with the rim. The strike is quite uneven with significant weakness at stars 5-7 and above the head with similar weakness at UNITED and along the bottom of the wreath. The remainder of the designs are nicely impressed. Breen says the uneven strike was caused by dies out of proper axial alignment (the die faces not parallel). This is the Breen plate coin for the latest state (although the caption for the plate is incorrectly marked as state I on page 823 in his large cent encyclopedia). A neat cent.

"1815" Turban Head Cent made from an 1813 S-293 VF20. Glossy light olive and steel brown, obviously recolored following the alterations to the 3 in the date. The engraving was accomplished with reasonably good skill, but a few small tool marks remain visible around the top of the "5" as testimony to the deception. Nonetheless, this is a decent example of a very popular "date" in the series, the only date in the 1793-1857 Large Cent series not struck by the Federal Mint. The surfaces are smooth and the only contact marks are a light rim bruise under the bust tip and another at D-S on the reverse. The host 1813 S-293 was an EDS strike.

1816 N-4 R2 EF45. Thin Date with "Twisted" Stars and Dentils. Five points sharper but there is a rim bruise at the D in UNITED. Otherwise choice offering outstanding eye appeal. Very early die state with slightly reflective fields on both sides. Fine but clearly visible die lines show above AME. The strike is quite unusual with a "twisted" appearance to the date and stars (similar to the "thin date" strikes of the 1818 N-7 variety, see lot #93 in our Dan Holmes sale 5/30/2010). The date numerals and stars are distorted and the numerals appear considerably thinner than normal. Similar twisting effect can be found on the legend and dentils outside the wreath, but the effect is not as obvious on the reverse. Four examples of the "twisted" 1818 N-7 have been traced, but this is the only example of the similarly struck 1816 N-4 known to us. A very curious cent.

1817 N-11 R1 G5. Double Struck. Slightly sharper but there are nearly a dozen rim nicks on the obverse, a half dozen fine hairline scratches on the portrait, traces of minor roughness on the right side of the obverse, and a planchet void from the N in ONE down to the E in CENT. Rather glossy steel and chocolate brown. Not perfect but not horrible, either. And it was double struck with a significant offset that is obvious on both sides. The first strike was 20% off center to K-7.5 and the second was centered but rotated about 110 degrees CW between the impressions. The lower part of the portrait from the first strike shows clearly in the field behind the portrait with Ms Liberty's chin near star 12. Several of the stars from the first strike are visible as well, including two in the field before the face. The reverse displays clear evidence of the first strike, including AM under the wreath. An impressive mint error in spite of the imperfect condition.
