1803 S-246 R3 VG10+. Attractive glossy chocolate brown and steel with darker olive brown toning in the protected areas. The two-tone look accents the designs and enhances the eye appeal. Would rate a slightly higher grade except for some barely visible hairline scratches in the field behind the portrait, all well hidden in the natural toning. Otherwise this piece is essentially flawless. EDS, Breen state I, prior to the appearance of the "Mumps" break under the chin at the throat.
Estimated Value $150-UP.

1803 S-261 R2 VF25. Sharpness EF45 with extremely fine roughness covering most of the obverse, particularly in the field behind the portrait. The reverse is considerably nicer showing mint frost in protected areas, but there are traces of extremely fine granularity in a few places. Frosty reddish chocolate brown with frosty lighter steel brown toning in protected areas on the reverse. No verdigris, and the only sign of contact is a thin nick in the drapery folds over the 0 in the date. Sharply struck MDS, Breen state IV, with a die crack arcing from the rim at K-6 to the rim at K-9 on the obverse. Swelling is starting to show left of the lower curls. Same for the reverse, only the lower half of that side is stronger than the upper part where TES OF is faint. E-MDS, Breen state II. There is a light die crack through the top of MERIC but not through the top of RTY, and there are no cud breaks on either side. A scarce intermediate die state for this tough date.

Lot 367
1807 S-271 R1 "Comet Obverse" VF20. Double Struck over Obverse Brockage with 2 Dates. Sharpness VF35 or better but a bit dull from extremely fine roughness that covers the planchet. No noticeable verdigris, and the only mark is a short v-shaped scratch on the upper part of the neck. Somewhat frosty dark olive brown and steel. EDS, Breen state II. The die clashmarks on the obverse are sharp but the "Comet" flaw behind the head has not formed. This cent was double struck. The first impression was an obverse brockage with both sides reasonably well centered on the planchet. The incuse impression is rotated perhaps 10-15 degrees relative to the normal one. The second strike was against a new blank planchet positioned about 20% off center to K-11 on the obverse while the reverse was struck by the reverse die. The uneven pressure created by the off-center planchet being pressed against the obverse during the second strike caused the top of the reverse to be very softly struck by the reverse die, and this left behind strong evidence of the obverse brockage. The entire incuse "1807" is obvious at the top of the reverse with much of the incuse bust and lowest curls remaining clear as well. A great mint error, and the error is obvious at arm's length.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
