[Eight Newspapermen] Greeley, Daniels, Mencken, Bryan, Noyes, Childs, and Brisbane, and Vanderbilt. Ten letters by eight prominent 19th and 20th century newspapermen, all on official letterhead: Horace Greeley (1811-1872) An 1863 ALS to Mr. Porter about a visit; Josephus Daniels (1862-1948) 1929 TLS to Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt recommending C. Leonard O'Connor to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court (Daniels was Sec. of the Navy during World War I); H.L. Mencken (1880-1956) A 1921 TLS to Ellery Sedgwick of the Atlantic Monthly regarding the possible sale of the Evening Post; William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) A 1904 TLS (with a few holograph corrections) from the three-time presidential candidate to Allen Burger, whom Bryant had met through a mutual acquaintance; Theodore W. Noyes (1858-1946) A 1938 TLS sending a signed 10 x 8" photo (present); George W. Childs (1929-1894) An 1884 ALS to George Shaw of the Evening Telegram in NYC sending a $500 check (not present) towards erecting a monument for Peter Cooper; Arthur Brisbane (1864-1936) A TLS to Mr. Markham, thanking him for a copy of his new book; and Cornelius "Commodore" Vanderbilt (1794-1877) Three1925 TlsS to Frank A. Holden regarding Holden's book War Memories and possibly publishing his memoirs. Letters are very good to fine.
