Lot 3467
Duchy of Beneventum. Liutprand, 751-758. Gold Solidus (3.97 g) minted c. 756-757. Facing bust of Justinian II wearing crown, mantle and robe; in right hand, globus cruciger; in left, mappa. Reverse: Cross with globe as terminal on four steps. BMC 2. Very rare. A well-hidden scrape is noted across the eyes and lower forehead of the obverse. The reverse has an attempted puncture which does not affect the obverse. There is some burnishing in the fields. It has the sharpness of Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated and is very attractive.

Modeled on the coinage of Justinian II, this gold solidus circulated aside normal Byzantine coins. The Beneventum duchy was founded circa AD 571, and was part of the greater Lombardic kingdom which included much of what we know as modern-day Italy. Its coinage lasted until 891, when the dukedom was captured by the Greeks.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.
