A little flatness on Zeus' thigh, nonetheless, one of the finest Ake mint tetradrachms we have handled. Pleasing Extremely Fine.

For well over 20 years the dated coinage of Ake and Sidon was predominant among the cities of Phoenicia. The dating itself was written in Phoenician numerals and placed just below the outstretched arm of Zeus on the reverse.

Superb style on both obverse and reverse. Boldly struck and perfectly centered. Mint State with lovely rose toning.

On this example, one can easily appreciate the spectacular detail and artistry that the celator has imparted to the dies. With ancient and all hand-struck coinage, the observer should judge individually the surfaces, strength of strike, centering, artistry of the dies (as appropriate to the era), edges, minting flaws, and relief. Compare to similar examples. Then, after a scientific appraisal, become personal and assess how compelling you find the coin. In this particular case, it is the finest coin of its type we have ever seen.
