Lot 759
1851/81 N-3 R1 51 over 81. NGC graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to steel brown on the devices, about two-thirds of the mint color remaining on both sides. There are a couple dozen microscopic specks of darker toning scattered over both sides plus a dull nick very well hidden on the upright of the first 1 in the date. Otherwise this cent is a gem. Sharply struck very early die state (VEDS), die state a early. Strong die lines cover the fields on the lower half of the obverse and the 51 over 81 (actually an inverted 18 as on the 1844 N-2 44/81 variety) is obvious. Undoubtedly all 4 digits were lightly punched into the die inverted followed by an attempt to efface the error that left all those die lines in the field around the date. This example is early enough to show a trace of the inverted 5 inside the bottom of the 8, but there is no clearly identifiable undertype remaining from the second 1 of the inverted date. Nonetheless, it is reasonable to assume all 4 digits went into the die upside down with only the 185 surviving the attempt to erase the error. This is an outstanding example of the variety and a "must" for every collector of "Redbook" types. Our grade is MS64, and it comes with an outstanding provenance. The attribution, "1851/Inv 18" feature, and Rasmussen provenance are noted on the NGC label.

Generous traces of faded mint red remain in protected areas, mostly on the reverse. The only marks are a tiny speck of carbon hidden in the dentil roots left of star 3 and a few tiny ticks on the chin. MDS, die state b. The fields are slightly reflective on both sides thanks to a fresh die lapping that removed the die lines that covered the fields in the early state. Microscopic die polishing lines are visible in the fields on both sides indicating this piece was struck shortly after the dies were placed back into service following the lapping. However, the 51 over 81 feature remains clear, including a remnant of the inverted 5 inside the bottom of the 8. A great die state for this popular variety. Our grade is MS63. 1852 N-21 R4. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Choice glossy medium brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and generous traces of mint red remaining on the reverse. Very attractive with smooth, choice surfaces, but there is a trace of very light friction on the highest points of the design. The only mark is a small, light nick on the chin. Great eye appeal. LDS, die state c, with a clear die crack from the coronet through star 5 to the dentils and a strong die clashmark up from the left top of the N in CENT. Our grade is AU58+, very close to mint state. Comes with a nice provenance.

1854 N-18 R3 EF45. Lustrous bluish steel and light olive brown. Very little wear is evident, but the obverse is covered with tiny lint marks caused by debris stuck to the die, and the strike is a bit flat on the lower half of that side. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas on both sides. The only notable mark is a small carbon spot on the left upright of the N in CENT. LDS, die state c. The die lines down through the E in ONE are gone but the clashmarks remain visible on both sides.
Estimated Value $75-UP.

Lot 783
1854 Pattern Cent Judd-161. NGC graded Proof 64 Brown. Glossy medium chocolate and darker bluish steel with mint red remaining on 5-10% of both sides. No spots or contact marks other than faint hairlines in the slightly reflective fields. Sharply struck on the obverse but there is some minor weakness on the wreath, as usual. The fields on the reverse are covered with fine die polishing lines extending from NW to SE. The diameter is 25mm versus the 28mm diameter for regular issue 1854 Large Cents. While the weight of this piece is not stated on the holder, the standard for these patterns was set at 96 grains versus the 168-grain standard for normal large cents at that time. These smaller pattern cents were proposed in an attempt to help combat the rise in the price of copper, which had risen so much by this time that a 168-grain large cent contained more than a cent’s-worth of copper. Sounds similar to the problem we have with our cents today. The Judd-161 attribution is noted on the NGC holder, which means the planchet is bronze. However, the planchet may be copper, in which case the attribution would be Judd-160. Can't really be sure, but the rarity is R-4 either way. Our grade is Proof-63.
Estimated Value $1,250-UP.

1855 N-3 R1 Upright 55 AU50. Five points sharper but there is a dusting of very fine crud in protected areas on the right side of the obverse. Otherwise this piece is void of defects and the eye appeal remains quite nice. Frosty chocolate and olive brown with reddish chocolate toning on star 3. M-LDS, die state b. The fields are covered with light radial die flowlines and the earlier line connecting the feet of the N & E in ONE is gone.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

EDS, die state a, prior to any die cracks or rim cuds. Our grade is MS65+, close to MS66. Housed in an old first-generation "rattler" holder.

1855 N-7 R1 Upright 55 AU55. Mint state sharpness but lightly cleaned and retoned glossy dark steel brown and chocolate with frosty reddish tan and light brown toning in the protected areas. No spots or contact marks. The best identifying mark is a faint swipe of darker toning between the tip of the nose and star 3. M-LDS, die state c. There is a fine die crack through the top of UN to the dentils over the right side of that N. Looks like a choice mint state cent.
Estimated Value $100-UP.
