Sharply struck E-MDS, die state b, showing well defined rim cud breaks from under the 18 up to the lower point of star 3. 1844/81 N-2 R2 1844 over Inverted 1844 (44 over 81). NGC graded MS-64 Brown. Frosty bluish steel and olive brown with ample lighter brown toning peeking through on the obverse and generous traces of faded mint color remaining on the reverse. The only marks are a small spot of very fine carbon nestled inside the top of the R in LIBERTY and another on the rim at star 11.5, plus a few extremely faint ticks on the cheek. The strike is decent for this variety, which never comes fully impressed, but there is still some weakness on the coronet over LIB and at the top of the ear making it difficult to determine if there is any friction in those places. For that reason, our grade on this cent is AU58 rather than MS60, but the reverse is clearly mint state. MDS, die state b. Thanks to the high grade of this piece, evidence of the initially inverted date is visible on all 4 digits, clearest on the 44 where the inverted 18 appears as "81." Regardless of the moniker commonly used to identify the variety, this is an important cent for the collector of "Redbook" varieties. The attribution and 44 over 81 feature are noted on the NGC label.

1847/7 N-2 R3 Large 7 over Small 7. ANACS graded MS-64 Brown. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate with traces of light bluish steel overtone in protected areas on the reverse. Sharply struck and the only marks are a spot of fine carbon in the dentils above the M in AMERICA and a less obvious one in the dentils over the F in OF plus a thin diagonal nick right of the base of E in ONE. E-MDS, die state a. Fine die lines extend from the dentils toward star 13 and the reverse is uncracked. The "Small 7" shows clearly above the top of the normal 7. In reality, the entire date was repunched with the center of rotation around the 8. Repunching is clearly visible on the 1, 4, and 7, and both 7's were from the same punch. The upper 7 just appears smaller because it was lightly impressed into the die before the date position was adjusted. But the "Large 7 over Small 7" name has stuck. Lot 734
1847 N-18 R5 Large 7 over Medium 7 MS62. Lustrous light olive and sea green mixed with hints of light bluish steel overtone in protected areas. A frosty, very attractive cent. Would be choice if not for a splash of reddish brown toning on the lower half of the E in ONE. The entire date was repunched on this variety, and the initial impression of the gang punch (all 4 digits held together as a unit) was slightly higher than the final, strongly punched date. The result is what has long been called a "Large 7 over Medium 7." Of course the punches used were the same size, but lightly punched numerals always appear smaller than heavily impressed ones due to their beveled edges (same for the N-2 "Large 7 over Small 7" variety). Older standard coin catalogs used to contain a separate listing for the "Large over Medium" variety, but that changed decades ago. Another interesting feature of this variety is the uniform "moonscape" appearance of the entire portrait of Ms Liberty. This curious feature is consistent on all the known examples of 47N18, and it is always found on the 1846 N-16 variety as well. Perhaps it was caused by a finely rusted head punch or hub that was employed in the preparation of the two varieties. Regardless of how it happened, every example of the two varieties in a grade high enough to show such things has this feature. Rare LDS, die state d, with strong rim cud breaks from under the 1 to star 1 and another from star 4 to star 5. An important cent, especially for collectors of rim cuds. Tied for CC#3 of the variety but finest of the late state.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.

Lot 735
1847 N-18 R5 Large 7 over Medium 7 EF40. At least five points sharper but lightly cleaned and retoned frosty bluish steel brown and chocolate. No spots or stains and only a few microscopic marks. The protected areas are covered with satiny mint luster. Rare terminal die state, state d, with strong rim cud breaks from below the 1 in the date to star 2 and another from star 4 nearly to star 5. The date repunching remains visible and the so called "Large 7 over Medium 7" feature is clear. And the curious "moonscape" effect seen on Ms Liberty (see the previous lot) is obvious on this example. Tied for CC#5 of about 20 known with these cud breaks, and several of those have weak cuds.
Estimated Value $500-UP.

Lot 736
1847 N-31 R5 Large 7 over Small 7 EF40. Sharpness near AU50 but cleaned and retoned glossy dark steel brown and chocolate, the reverse several shades darker than the obverse. The surfaces are smooth but do show a few light contact marks, including a dull nick on the upper right side of star 7, a couple tiny rim nicks under the 47 in the date, and a dull nick in the dentils over the left side of star 7. MDS, die state c early. Fine die cracks show at MER and TES, but the one through the top of UNITED is extremely faint. The date repunching is clear at the top of the 47, and the so-called "Large 7 over Small 7" feature is obvious (see the description for the 1847 N-2 offered earlier for a discussion of the date repunching). Tied for CC#8 in the Grellman census. Removed from an NCS slab graded Uncirculated details improperly cleaned (NCS label included, and it shows the attribution and Reiver provenance).
Estimated Value $400-UP.
