1807 S-271 R1 Comet Obverse VF20+. Sharpness VF35 with extremely fine porosity under an attractive chocolate brown patina. The highpoints are a slightly lighter shade of brown and this piece offers nice eye appeal in spite of the imperfect surfaces. No verdigris and only a few minor contact marks. The notable marks are a tiny pinprick between the feet of the R & T in LIBERTY and a light scratch hidden in the hair under that R. Both sides are covered with an extremely thin layer of lacquer or some similar protectant, but this is very difficult to detect. M-LDS, Breen state VI. The "Comet" break is bold as are the other linear die flaws on the obverse. An attractive example of this popular "Redbook" variety.
Estimated Value $400-UP.

1807/6 S-273 R1 Overdate Large 7 over 6 VF20. Sharpness VF35 but there are a half dozen small spots of raised reddish brown verdigris, mostly on the obverse. The notable ones are on the bust and at the dentils left of the neck. Rather glossy dark olive brown. There is shallow dirt or verdigris caked into protected areas on the reverse and the dark patina suggests the planchet is not perfectly smooth under the toning. Nonetheless, the eye appeal is decent and the overdate is bold. LDS, Breen state IV, showing obvious swelling in the field left of the lowest curl and a narrow rim cud break at ST in STATES (this rim cud extends to the adjacent A in the latest state).

1809 S-280 R2 Turban Head VF20. Slightly sharper, especially on the reverse where the details suggest a VF30 grade, but this piece was lightly cleaned and is nicely retoned glossy light to medium chocolate brown. Smooth and attractive, void of any hint of roughness or verdigris, and the only notable mark is a shallow planchet flake at the dentils off the end of the wreath ribbon. MDS. A date that is tough to find in grades above Fine with smooth surfaces.

1810 S-282 R2 Turban Head AU50. Choice frosty chocolate brown with underlying lustrous lighter brown toning in protected areas on the obverse. Satiny flowline luster covers the protected areas on both sides and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal, especially for a Turban Head cent. Just a touch of friction on the highpoints from mint state. The best identifying mark, and it is trivial, is a tiny tick on the rim even with the lower left point of star 3. MDS, Breen state III. Struck with the obverse die slightly misaligned to K-10 while the reverse is off a similar amount to K-1.5. A premium example in every respect.

The planchet is smooth except for a small spot of raised verdigris in the field close over the bust tip plus additional fine verdigris or crud nestled around the lower part of CENT. Mostly glossy chocolate brown and steel with puffs of darker chocolate toning on the reverse. E-MDS, Breen state I. The date is bold and the overdate feature is obvious.

1813 S-293 R2 Turban Head PCGS graded AU50. The so-called 3 over 2 overdate variety. Frosty chocolate and steel. Satiny mint luster shows in some of the protected areas on both sides. No hint of roughness or verdigris. The only marks, and they are not at all significant, are a nick on the outer point of star 6 and a dull scratch down the right side of the D in UNITED. M-LDS, Breen state III. Evidence of the 3 over 2 overdate, which is visible only in the early die state, is gone. The strike is a bit uneven, as usual for the die state, with weakness at stars 6 & 7 and on the opposing UN in UNITED (caused by die faces out of parallel alignment). Our grade is EF40.

1816 N-2 R1. NGC graded MS-63 Brown. Frosty steel and light olive brown with hints of underlying faded mint color peeking through on the reverse. A nice example of this Randall Hoard variety with only a few minor imperfections. These include a collection of microscopic ticks in the field over star 1, a dusting of very fine carbon between stars 10 & 11, and a light diagonal nick right of the E in ONE. M-LDS showing rim cud breaks from star 8 to star 11 plus a smaller one at star 11.5. Clear repunching shows on the 81 in the date, and the reverse is rotated 45 degrees CW from the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Our grade is net AU58, but you could easily make a good case for mint state as this cent never saw circulation and the reverse is nearly choice.
