Lot 487
1793 S-2 R4+ Chain AMERICA G5. A couple points sharper, especially on the reverse, but there is a thin scratch from the nose into the field under the chin plus a half dozen additional scratches on the reverse. Most of the planchet is smooth and attractive, but there are numerous thin planchet lamination voids on the obverse and perhaps a dozen tiny pits on the upper third on that side. Traces of dark greenish verdigris can be found in the bottom of these pits. On the positive side of the ledger, the date is weak but remains readable and the legends are clear. Rather glossy medium brown and chocolate, the obverse a bit woodgrained.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.

1793 S-4 R3 Chain AMERICA with periods. PCGS graded VF-30. Clipped Planchet. Sharpness EF40 but covered with uniform extremely fine granularity. No verdigris, and the only mark is a light rim bruise just left of the date. Very dark steel. The surfaces are dull but they appear to have never been brushed, so the potential for more lively surfaces may be there. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I. The die cracks under the lowest curls have not formed. A narrow, slightly beveled planchet clip is visible behind the head, and the clip is slightly less obvious at the opposing area above ER in AMERICA. The periods following LIBERTY and the date are clear. Our grade is EF40 sharpness net VF25 for the imperfect surfaces. The "PERIODS" feature is noted on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.

Lot 489
1793 S-5 R4 Wreath Cent with Large LIBERTY. NGC graded AU-55. Vine & Bars Edge. Frosty light olive and steel brown with delicate overtones of sea green and light bluish steel covering the fields and protected areas. Possibly lightly cleaned long ago but the frosty toning is attractive and the eye appeal is excellent. Just a few trivial marks on smooth surfaces that are void of any planchet flaws. The notable marks are a microscopic speck of verdigris or crud nestled between the right two leaves of the sprig above the date and extremely faint abrasions around the outside edge of the obverse rim (visible only under strong magnification). Sharply struck EDS, Breen state I. The border beads above LI and BER have not crumbled (the ones over LI crumble first, but Breen failed to differentiate to this degree), although the border beads above LI are starting to swell. The obverse is struck very slightly off center to K-8 causing weakness in the border beads in that area. The reverse is off slightly to K-4 but all the border beads are sharply defined on that side. Overall a really nice example of the Large LIBERTY type which is represented by this single die variety. Our grade is EF45. The S-5 variety attribution is noted on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $30,000-UP.

Lot 490
1793 S-6 R3 Wreath Cent. PCGS graded AU-50. Vine & Bars Edge. The so-called "Sprung Die" variety. Frosty medium brown and tan with darker steel brown and chocolate toning on the highpoints. No corrosion or verdigris, essentially free of contact marks. The only defects are some very fine planchet striations on the left side of the obverse (as struck). These microscopic planchet fissures are slanted from NW to SE, and only one visible without the aid of a glass is in the field behind the head. M-LDS, Breen state V. The usual wave in the field behind the head (genesis of the "Sprung Die" label) is strong and a fine but clear horizontal die crack extends from the lower lip into the field. A very attractive Wreath Cent. Our grade is VF35.
Estimated Value $14,000-UP.

1793 S-8 R3 Wreath Cent VF20. Vine & Bars Edge. Sharpness at least 5 points better but there are myriad very faint hairline scratches in the fields on both sides, all very well hidden under the attractive glossy chocolate brown toning. This piece looks flawless to the unaided eye, and the hairlines are visible only under strong magnification. The surfaces are very smooth with no trace of corrosion, verdigris, or planchet flaws. The only marks other than the hairlines are a very light rim bruise left of the lower curls and a thin vertical nick in the hair left of the neck. Great eye appeal for the grade. LDS, Breen state III. The diagonal die crack inside the wreath is strong and the area surrounding the crack is clearly swollen. A great type coin for the 1793 Wreath Cent with Vine & Bars edge.

1793 S-9 R2 Wreath Cent. PCGS graded EF-40, CAC Approved. Vine & Bars Edge. The obverse is glossy medium brown fading to light chocolate while the reverse is a more uniform glossy light olive and medium chocolate brown with slightly lighter brown in protected areas. No corrosion or verdigris and only a few minor marks. These include a couple tiny planchet flakes at the border beads left of the top of the head and a couple more at the border beads under the bust tip (all as struck), and three light rim bruises at UNIT. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state III, with a die crack through CA to the wreath stem and ribbon but not extending through the ribbon to the fraction bar. The obverse is rather well centered on the planchet but the reverse is off a bit to K-1 leaving some of the border beads off the planchet. A smooth, very attractive Wreath Cent. Our grade is VF30.

1793 S-9 R2 Wreath Cent VG10. Vine & Bars Edge. Clipped Planchet. A couple points sharper with a pair of dull, very old scratches through the lowest lock of hair left of the date, a few faint scratches in the fields at the top of the obverse, and a rim nick under the tip of the bust. The planchet is decent but not perfectly smooth in the fields and protected areas, and there are patches of very thin reddish scale nestled around some of the devices. Rather glossy steel brown and chocolate. The date and legends are complete and easily readable. Struck on a planchet with a minor mint-made clip left of the lower curls and over ST in STATES. Traces of the vertical bars of the Vine & Bars edge device are lightly impressed into the shallow clip, but the deepest part of the clip is missing the edge device. Decent but unremarkable as a Wreath Cent, but examples with a clipped planchet are extremely rare.

Just a few trivial contact marks including a very light nick in the field behind the head, a tick near the dentils right of the date, and a light diagonal nick right of the E in ONE. EDS, Breen state I. The obverse border beads are complete and strong, including all the beads before the face. A narrow but clearly defined rim cud break shows outside the border beads at UNITE. There are a few very tiny specks of greenish verdigris before the face and a spot of raised reddish corrosion at the foot of the T in LIBERTY. The only notable contact marks are some very fine hairline scratches on the portrait and a shallow planchet chip out of the E in ONE on the reverse. Slightly glossy steel brown and light chocolate with darker steel brown and olive toning in protected areas. 1793 S-11c R3- Wreath Cent with Lettered Edge. PCGS graded AU-50. Variety with a single leaf following DOLLAR. Glossy light olive brown and chocolate with slightly lighter brown toning in protected areas on the obverse. Smooth and quite attractive with no trace of corrosion or verdigris. This variety is plagued with planchet flaws, but this planchet is nearly perfect. The only defect is a small comet-like swipe of brassy impurity in the field before the neck, and a thin void is located inside the brassy area. Otherwise this planchet is choice. Just a few contact marks, including a diagonal nick on the cheek, a couple rim nicks opposite the mouth, and another dull rim nick left of the lowest curl. There is a depression arcing just inside the edge at K-4 to K-6 on the obverse, a result of an aborted planchet cutter impression. This mark affects some of the border beads but it is not distracting at all. EDS, Breen state I, before any die clashmarks. Struck slightly off center to K-2 leaving some border beads off the planchet on both sides. Our grade is EF40. The edge lettering is not visible in the slab, but the S-11c Lettered Edge variety designation is included on the PCGS label.

1793 S-11c R3- Wreath Cent with Lettered Edge. NGC graded AU-50. Variety with a single leaf following DOLLAR. Glossy chocolate brown mixed with some slightly lighter brown toning from a very light cleaning. No corrosion or verdigris. There are a few of the usual tiny planchet fissures on the obverse. These tiny fissures are located in the field before the neck, on the neck, and hidden in the hair to the left of the neck. None of these fissures is distracting and there are certainly fewer of them than normal for this variety. The only notable contact marks are a pair of nicks over ON in ONE and another under the first A in AMERICA. E-MDS, Breen state II. Clear die clashmarks show in the field before the neck. Our grade is EF40 net VF35 for the light cleaning. The edge lettering is not visible in the slab, but the S-11c variety designation is noted on the NGC label.

1799 S-189 R2 G6. Sharpness VF20 or better where properly impressed, but the strike was uneven leaving the date and bust tip very weak while everything else is strong. Breen mentions this was caused by having the die faces out of proper parallel alignment, what he calls "axial misalignment" (see the Breen encyclopedia, page 544, for a discussion of how this striking problem affected so many of the 1799 S-189 cents). The planchet is covered with light to moderate roughness and the lower third of the obverse is covered with light horizontal scratches, all blended perfectly into the natural dark olive and steel patina. Estimated Value $500-UP.

1803 S-246 R3 "Mumps" Variety F12. Glossy steel and light olive brown. A smooth, attractive cent. The only defects are some tiny contact marks scattered over both sides, including a thin nick under the left side of the O in ONE. Very nice for the grade. LDS, Breen state IV. There is a strong cud break connecting the tops of STA to the rim and the crumbling at the throat (the "Mumps" break) is clear.
Estimated Value $200-UP.

1804 S-266c R2 VF25. Sharpness at least EF45, and you could make a good argument that this cent never saw circulation at all, but the planchet is covered with uniform very fine granularity. No verdigris, and the only mark is a microscopic pinprick in the field left of the lowest curl. Frosty dark steel gray with subtle overtones of light bluish steel. Sharply struck LDS, Breen state IV, with bold rim cud breaks at RTY and MERIC. Great detail, especially for this tough date, and the eye appeal is decent in spite of the imperfect surfaces.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.

1804 S-266a R4+ G4. Sharpness VG10 but there is obvious tape residue across the obverse, 4 small but rather deep digs on the upper half of the reverse, and shallow scrapes along the right side of the 4 to under the bust tip. Not the most attractive cent in this sale, but the date and legends are clear. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks or rim cuds.
