Lot 2119
1795. 13 leaves below eagle. . BD-1, Rarity 3+. NGC graded AU Details, obverse planchet flaw. A rather pleasing looking coin with mint caused minor planchet flaws in the left obverse field and some scattered minor marks about the rims here and there. Plenty of detail and all, overlaid with natural rose color gold toning. Popular First Year of the type and actually, our nation's first gold coin. Only 5,583 eagles struck.

Under the terms of the Coinage Act of 1792, the obverses of all the coins, copper, silver, and gold, had to depict Liberty, then as now an allegorical female figure. The reverses of the silver and gold coins had to depict an eagle. With those requirements in force, and a requirement that certain inscriptions appear on all the coins, mint engraver Robert Scot set to work in 1795 on the eagle designs.

The gold eagle obverse depicts a bust of Liberty facing right and wearing a soft cap (not the pileus or Liberty cap found on the Liberty cap half cent and cent, among other U.S. coins). Liberty's hair flows freely, down over her truncated shoulders.

LIBERTY occupies the under border above and to the right of the portrait, with stars arranged along the back of her head and from the Y in LIBERTY to the tip of the bust. The number of stars and their arrangement and exact positioning of LIBERTY vary from year to year.

The first reverse, that of 1795-97, depicts the mandatory eagle, which some believe Scot copied from a sketch or engraving of a first century A.D. onyx cameo held in a museum in Vienna. The eagle holds a small wreath aloft in its beak and a palm branch in its talons. This is the most often seen variety having 13 leaves in the palm branch. The eagle's wings are outstretched. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA encircles the design (PCGS # 8551) .
Estimated Value $20,000 - 22,000.

1799. Small Obverse Stars. . BD-7, Breen-6840. PCGS graded AU-50 PQ. Lovely golden toning. Undergraded by several points and an attractive specimen. Production of gold Eagles increased to 37,449 coins for 1799, giving this issue of capped bust eagle the second highest mintage for the series. While all of the obverse dies bear 13 stars arranged eight and five, two different star punch sizes were used; the resulting varieties are called Small Stars and Large Stars. The numerals in the date are spaced variously: Some coins have a Close Date, some a Wide Date, and others an Irregular Date. Ten die varieties are known for 1799, representing the combinations of five obverse dies and seven reverse dies. BD-7 is noteworthy for crumbling of the obverse die over the stars at left (PCGS # 98562) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 16,000.

1842-O NGC graded AU Details. Reverse improperly cleaned. Well struck. This is a scarce, early New Orleans Mint strike. Only 27,400 were produced. By the later 1840s into the early 1850s, mintage increased markedly. Collectors often have to search for a year or two to acquire an acceptable 1842-O like this sharp example (PCGS # 8587) .

1848. NGC graded MS-61. Light golden toning with luster still evident. A desirable, original coin from the middle No Motto timeframe that boasts mint luster and a fairly decent to sharp strike. This is certainly one of the more elusive dates in Mint condition. The surfaces are cleaner than average for a gold coin of this period, and this piece has obviously seen careful handling since the time it was struck. We note two small marks below the nose that will identify it. If you are a date or Type specialist, or simply someone looking for an historic example for your gold collection, then here is a worthy $10 Eagle to acquire. Pop 11; 11 finer (PCGS # 8599) .

1849. NGC graded MS-61. Mostly untoned. Few collectors have seen a strictly Uncirculated 1849 No Motto Eagle. With that in mind, the importance of this coin in this grade is immediately apparent. Population figures attest to its scarcity. Quite an attractive coin, the fields are bright and frosty while the striking details are strong in some areas but also slightly deficient in the centers where the detail is rarely brought up in these areas. Normal light handling marks. There are no singular abrasions of note on either side, just tiny field marks evenly scattered across both sides. We note a lengthy die crack from the rim through the tops of UN and continuing through the bottoms of TEN before petering away in the field left of D. An important coin for the specialist. Only 625 examples are estimated to have survived. Pop 17; 22 finer, 11 in 62, 7 in 63, 4 in 64 (PCGS # 8601) .
Estimated Value $2,600 - 2,800.

1884-CC PCGS graded Genuine. Our grade is AU58. Close to Mint State and one of the more intriguing dates in the $10 gold series. All 1884-CC Eagles seen to date have some raised die lines on Liberty's neck, as though something injured the dies during striking or, more logical, the person prepping the obverse die inadvertently left behind these "engraver's lines." Scarce in all grades, of course, because of its low mintage (PCGS # 8704) .
