Lot 1990
1855. NGC graded MS-62. A fresh and frosty untoned example. In 1854 James B. Longacre restyled the gold dollar to an increased diameter of 15 mm, a move intended to make the gold dollar easier to handle in commerce. This diameter was retained for the remaining years of the denomination.

The obverse motif was changed from a coronet-crested Liberty head to the head of an Indian princess, albeit featuring Liberty in disguise wearing a feather headdress and a band inscribed LIBERTY, facing left, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounding. The reverse shows a wreath of corn, cotton, wheat, and tobacco, similar to that used on the $3 of the same year (and the Flying Eagle cent minted later, beginning in 1856).

From the very outset difficulties in striking ensued. The high relief of the head of Miss Liberty on the obverse caused the situation in which metal flowing into the deep die recess for the obverse prevented the relief areas on the corresponding part of the reverse, particularly the central two digits of the date, from striking up properly. Also there were problems with the striking up of the wreath and certain parts of Miss Liberty’s head (PCGS # 7532) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 2,600.

1855. NGC graded AU-58. Untoned. Popular short-lived Type. James B. Longacre modified this 1854-56 design for his $3 gold pieces and 1856-89 gold dollars, but this is the first and in higher relief than was typical for coin designs in those days (PCGS # 7532) .

Lot 2000
1879. NGC graded Proof 64 Ultra Cameo. A lovely untoned example. An impressive, well contrasted specimen with glittering fields set against heavily frosted devices. A hardly detectable, paper-thin blemish by the 9 of the date has no ill-effect on the coin's considerable eye appeal and is all that keeps this elusive early Proof from Gem Proof 65 status. The 1879 gold dollar is a very rare coin as a Proof and not a date to be confused with the much more plentiful Proofs struck from 1881 to 1889 in the series. Only 30 pieces were produced and, since most business strikes display full Prooflike brilliance, the number of Proof 1879 gold dollars available has been exaggerated for many years. In reality, their numbers may be as few as a dozen coins. Pop 1; 2 finer, 1 in 65 and 1 in 66 Star .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

1886. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. Only 1,016 minted of which merely 150 examples are estimated to have survived. One of the superior examples of this date, and a glittering Gem. Fresh golden color on the devices with deeply mirrored fields surrounding. Satiny frost on the devices provides maximum contrast against the mirror fields, enough to earn the coveted "Cameo" designation by NGC. If you demand a forthright Gem Proof Gold Dollar, then look no further than this lot. Pop 11; 15 finer, 11 in 66, 1 in 66 Star, 3 in 67 (PCGS # 87636) .
