Lot 1409
1795 B-5, BB-27 Rarity 1. PCGS graded EF-40. 3 Leaves. Lovely toning on both sides. Here, too, we are pleased to describe a well struck coin with original color, and squarely within the strict guidelines for EF40 grade. It would be difficult to say the coin is piercingly sharp for the date. Liberty in particular, lacks some of the higher relief design. However this is due to the head being in much higher relief than on post-Flowing Hair issues. Easily finer in sharpness than many in nominally higher grades, though. Two leaves under each wing. A popular Red Book variety (PCGS # 6852) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

Lot 1410
1798 B-23, BB-105 Rarity 3. PCGS graded AU-55. CAC Approved. Wide date. Nicely toned. A luminous example of optimum quality for the AU55 grade: The luster is extensive, frosty, unbeatable; as well, and the strike is nearly full, being quite crisp in most places with the exception of the central portion of the motifs on obverse and reverse. This is a characteristic of most 1798 varieties.

The distinctive reverse (Reverse "H") on this variety is noted for having several die flaws, one between ST, another between TE, another at right of E in STATES. There is also a curved die flaw above third upper right star on reverse. 5 small berries, the two above closest together. Leaf point is under left foot of I in AMERICA. Star distant from eagle's beak. Arc star pattern; star ray points to center of B in PLURIBUS. 13 arrows. This reverse die was used to strike 1798 BB-105 (late state) and BB-106 (early state). Pop 1; 1 finer in 58 for the variety (PCGS # 40022) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.

1799 B-16, BB-158 Rarity 2 PCGS graded Genuine, cleaned. Our grade is Sharpness of Fine The "Close 17 obverse" variety. Left stars distant from curl and L; star 7 is farther from L on this than on any other obverse of the year. Right stars close to Y and bust. This die is quickly recognized by keeping the above in mind. Numerals 1 and 7 closer together on this than on any other 1799 obverse. This obverse die used to strike 1799 BB-158 only.

It is combined with Reverse "I" in which U in UNITED is defective at the upper left part, which is cut off, due to employment of a defective U punch. Point of star touches point of lower part of eagle's beak; ray points to left serif at left side of U in PLURIBUS. Star under cloud 1 is noticeably smaller than any other. A in AMERICA rests on 4th feather. This long-surviving reverse was used to coin BB-158, 159, 160, and 161 (PCGS # 6878) .

Lot 1416
1844. PCGS graded MS-62. CAC Approved PQ. Only 20,000 minted. Well struck with lovely toning. A fully struck example with a light overlay of natural "old silver" color. Close examination reveals extensive mint frostiness throughout the fields, across the devices. Destined for a fine collection.

The year 1844 was notable for the first of low-mintage silver dollars of this design. Scant supplies of silver bullion continued to be one of the main problems, according to the Bowers-Borckhardt encyclopedia, "and the situation was not made easier by the fact that many United States silver coins were shipped to Europe and Asia in payment for import transactions. Only one delivery of silver dollars was made this year; that of 20,000 pieces on December 31st. The China trade in particular demanded silver in later years, although as certain ports of China were opened for the first time to Westerners in 1842, it probably is the case that by 1844 relatively little trade had yet developed between the United States and that country." Pop 15; 11 finer (PCGS # 6930) .

Lot 1424
1873-CC PCGS graded Genuine, holed and plugged. Our grade is Sharpness of XF. A popular key date. The 1873-CC is second only to the famous 1870-S in rarity among regular issue With Motto Seated dollars, 1866-73. Although it does not earn the lowest mintage of the Carson City dollars (that distinction belongs to the 1871-CC), the number of survivors is lower than any other CC date. Only 2,300 pieces were struck of the 1873-CC, and it is very likely that the many (most?) were melted, with possibly 750 and 1,000 pieces put into circulation. The reason for the low mintage was clear: the mints were preparing to strike the replacement Trade dollar, which was also first minted in 1873 (PCGS # 6972) .

1878. PCGS graded Proof 64. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Lovely toning. A glistening beauty and a top-choice for this date by any standards. An engaging display of lively pale dusky lavender-gold iridescence leaps across the nicely mirrored surfaces of this scarce Philadelphia Mint Proof-only issue. The strike is strong for the date, with complete stars and hair definition. Only 900 struck. Pop 68; 18 finer (PCGS # 7058) .

1880. PCGS graded Proof 65. CAC Approved PQ. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Only 1,987 pieces struck. Pop 60; 28 finer. Lovely multicolor toning.

In an attempt to obtain the best possible design for the new Trade Dollar, Mint Director Linderman used a provision of the new Coinage Act of 1873 to hire outside artists. There were several patterns made for the 1873 trade dollar, but in the end Linderman chose one by Chief Engraver William Barber. The adopted design had the familiar figure of a seated Liberty, but in a somewhat different pose from the regular coinage. There was a great deal of ceremony connected with the first trade dollar coinage, and business strike mintage was heavy for quite some time. Most of the 1873 coinage did go to the Orient, as intended in the legislation, but by 1874 the ever-declining world price of silver made it advantageous to dump many of the trade dollars on the American domestic market for whatever they would bring. After 1878, only Proofs were issued to supply a hearty band of numismatists. The series ended (officially) with the 1883-dated coins.

A splendid Gem specimen with silver-blue (almost electric blue) and lavender color at the periphery, giving way to iridescent lighter shades inward. Among Proof Trade Dollars, those dated in the 1880s are the most easily found in Gem Proof; in terms of high numerical grade desirability and true eye appeal, collectors often choose these. This coin sails through with flying colors and will no doubt be a "must have" item for anyone who has been searching for such a piece for a long time (PCGS # 7060) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500.

Lot 1434
1879-CC. NGC graded MS-64. Housed in a Black GSA Holder. Scarce. It has been often said that the 1880-CC, 1881-CC and 1885-CC all have lower mintage, yet the 1879-CC is much the rarest CC-mint Morgan Dollar struck from 1878 to 1885. This fact aside, market offerings for examples that grade up to and including MS64 bring out many bidders. Gems are very expensive which makes a near gem like this MS64 a worthy compromise. This splendid CC-mint Morgan is swathed in thick, rich, frosted white luster. Both sides show as brilliant at all angles, with magnificent delicate silvery tinting that seems to be present to confirm the coin's originality. Admirably sharp in strike, with exceptional smooth-looking surfaces for an 1879 CC-mint silver dollar. Nearly gem! Pop 66; 6 finer in 65 (PCGS # 7086) .

1879-CC. PCGS graded MS-64. Lovely gold and blue toning. An always-popular date, this example is certainly solid quality for the assigned grade. Both sides are exceptionally resilient with frosty luster, a characteristic that is most readily evident, and perhaps most significant, in the obverse field around Liberty's portrait. The cheek is free of all but a few light bagmarks, and the devices are sharply impressed in virtually all areas. A rich endowment of mint frost, as said, rounds out this rarity's list of positive features (PCGS # 7086) .

1879-CC. PCGS graded MS-62. CAC Approved. A glistening Choice white coin with the brilliant frostiness one associates with this CC mint date. Likely it traces to the small number of coins released by the U.S. Treasury Department in the 1970s when close to 3 million mainly 1882-84 "CC" mint Morgan Dollars were sold to the public in a series of sales. There were only a few 1879-CC Morgans in the group. They retain their aura of rarity, desirability, and the mystique that comes from having been issued by the Carson City Mint (PCGS # 7086) .

If one were to take a poll, we'd see that the strike is above-board for a 1879-CC in being nicely detailed even at centers with the metal flows on both sides into the deepest die recesses; in other words, a choice strike (PCGS # 7086) .

In addition to unqualified technical superiority for a CC-mint dollar, this coin's desirability is enhanced by beautiful silvery brilliance.
