Lot 4073
1849-C $5 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62 "Bass" on PCGS insert. Bright golden luster over fields that are a touch prooflike. An extremely rare coin in Mint State, with the current PCGS Population Report showing just 3 coins graded this high, with 3 graded higher (Mint State 64 is the finest). Boldly impressed by the dies, with full stars on the obverse, and excellent separation on the upper curls of Liberty. Similar on the reverse, with bold definition on Liberty's claws and wings, with minor weakness on a few of the thigh feather tips only. High in the Condition Census for the date, and certain to please the specialist.
The obverse appears to be a higher grade, and what few marks there are on this coin are mostly located above the eagle, where some shallow scrapes are found.
On the reverse there is a light die crack from the rim through the upper left serif of the U to the olive leaves.
Estimated Value $12,500 - 15,000.
Ex: Harmer-Rouke's sale of December, 1970, lot 3179; Bowers and Merena's Harry W. Bass, Jr. II sale, October, 1999, lot 1004.

Lot 4074
1859 $5 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62 "Bass" on the PCGS insert. A monumental coin for the specialists, this is the only mint state coin graded by PCGS of this date! The obverse boasts strong cartwheel luster over the satiny fields. Similar on the reverse, with glowing luster and a hint of orange toning. On the obverse, there is a long, shallow scrape before Liberty's face in the field, and a small mark below her chin in the field, near her neck. The fields reflect minor hairlines. This is a low mintage date, with just 16,814 struck and pitifully few were saved at the time of issue. Don't expect to find a better one!
Well struck for the date, and with abundant eye-appeal throughout.
Estimated Value $10,000-UP.
Purchased privately from Don Devore, August 21, 1968; Bowers and Merena, Inc., Harry W. Bass, Jr. II sale, October, 1999, lot 1111.

1863-S $5 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-50 "HW Bass Jr Coll" on PCGS insert. Well up in the Condition Census for the date, this is one of just 3 so graded by PCGS, with 6 graded higher, the best of which is MS-61. Luster in the fields, and graced by a delicate golden-orange color on both sides. Moderate handling marks from brief circulation, a couple on Liberty's neck, on the reverse nothing worthy of note. Well struck from lightly clashed dies (reverse) and with a few faint die cracks in the lettering.
Estimated Value $7,500 - 10,000.

1863-S $5 Liberty. AU-50. Although the reported mintage is 17,000 coins, most were apparently lost or later melted, as very few of these are known today. For instance, PCGS has only graded a single coin in Mint State of this date, and only a few in various AU grades. We note a small mark on Liberty's chest, and a rim bruise below the last star. This may have been a sea water coin, as the luster is subdued. Moderate hairlines from a cleaning, as usual on these rare, early date gold pieces. Still one of the finest of this rare date.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.

1882-CC $5 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58. As nice as this coin is usually found, only 9 have been graded in mint state, while 15 have qualified for AU-58 according to a recent PCGS Population Report. Mintage of 82,817 for the year, but most circulated into lower grades. Frosty luster and completely untoned. Struck from clashed dies, especially on the reverse, and with a faint die crack through the last three digits of the date, and wing tips on the reverse.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

1895 $5 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-63 Premium Quality. Wow, here is a real wonder! Take a look at this coin to see how tough PCGS can be. The surfaces are outstanding, each side boasts full mint bloom and everything about this coin screams gem. A glass will note a few very minor contact marks, but nothing like what is usually found on a "choice" coin of this grade. Don't miss this opportunity to purchase a magnificent half eagle.

1800 $10 Capped Bust. NGC graded MS-60. Frosty mint luster on both sides, with only moderate handling marks generally located in the fields. Well struck for this scarce date, and seldom found in grades even approaching mint state. There is a minor scrape extending down in the obverse field from the inner point of the third star, and a tiny mark just between the left claw of the eagle and the U of UNITED. Coppery toning on the high points of the devices and quite pleasant in appearance. There is some minor residue on the TED of UNITED and near the left wing of the eagle. Early die state, with the obverse crack just beginning through LIBERTY, and with the dentils clashed above STAT from the obverse die. Celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, making this a good time to put it away.
