1911-S $5 Indian. PCGS graded AU-58. Here is one of those numismatic mysteries, this coin is essentially new, but the graders at PCGS detected some minute wear on the highest points, or softness in strike. Either way, this coin is valued by the market at approximately one-half what a minutely better mint state coin would bring. This piece is clearly the better value, offering 99 percent of the surfaces of mint state piece, yet at substantial discount to the mint state price.
Estimated Value $250 - 300.

RARE GEM 1916-S $5. PCGS graded MS-65. One of the finest known of the date, the NGC and PCGS combined Population Reports show the following: only 12 graded this high, with just 3 coins graded higher. Each service shows similar numbers, and there is a very high likelyhood that some coins are represented twice with resubmittals to the grading services a common practice. Thus, this coin is likely much rarer than the Population Reports would dictate. While this date is available in lower mint state grades, in true gem condition, it is extremely rare. This particular coin has vibrant luster throughout, and a hint of toning on the reverse rim. A glass will note a few widely scattered marks, but this coin is truly superb. We note one very thin scratch below the Indian's chin for accuracy. If you demand one of the very finest of the date, then here is a coin for you. In PCGS holder #5781543.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000.

Lot 1024
1916-S $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-64. Blazing gold luster throughout and well struck by the dies. The mintage for the year came in at 240,000 pieces, and the denomination was retired until 1929. With the war unfolding in Europe, most of these entered circulation, or were shipped overseas to pay for the huge war effort. The fields and devices are far better than usually encountered on this date, and to find an example with such abundant eye-appeal is quite a challenge for the date collector. The current PCGS Population Report notes only 57 have been graded as such, with just 6 coins graded higher. That makes this grade the finest readily available.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.
