1885-S $5 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64. Here is a really original coin. The surfaces show a scattering of ticks, none deep or annoying, and the luster is a fresh as the day it was coined. Boldly struck and with 172 so graded by PCGS, only 13 graded higher though, making this about the best anyone could hope to find. One for the date collector.
Estimated Value $750 - 850.

Lot 944
1894 $5 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64. Although nearly one million were struck, this date is virtually impossible to find in gem condition, after all these years of PCGS grading, only 13 have been graded this high, with a single coin graded higher! Therefore, this is one of the very best to survive of the date. Two small nicks, one on Liberty's lower neck, the other in the field near Liberty's nose.
Estimated Value $1,800 - 2,200.

1901 $5 Liberty. NGC graded MS-64. This coin is very choice for the grade. We note that the 1 has an extra lump left of its base, probably from a wide repunching, the 9 also shows some doubling the same direction. A die crack is noted though the last A of AMERICA to the arrowhead. Impressive and appealing.

1901-S $5 Liberty. NGC graded MS-65. A frosty gem that boasts clean surfaces for the grade and remains untoned. One area of post minting debris is noted on the R of AMERICA, but this could be removed if the coin was taken out of the holder, it does not appear to be affecting the coin in any way. Boldly struck and perfect for the type collector.

ASTOUNDING 1902-S PCGS GRADED MINT STATE 68. PCGS graded MS-68. One of the highest graded coins of the entire series of half eagles, this stunning and nearly perfect 1902-S defies the imagination. The surfaces are so pristine, so nearly perfect, that it was awarded one of the highest grades given to any half eagle. Mint State 68. Amazing. This is no modern commemorative piece which was shipped from the mint in a custom plastic holder, it was just an average half eagle that somehow survived in absolutely pristine condition. The coin has acquired light coppery toning over the years and retains its full luster in the fields. A glass fails to find fault, and the strike, of course, is full and complete.
Turning to the PCGS Population Report, we note that this is the only coin graded as such for the date, but remarkably there is a higher graded coin, yes there is a Mint State 69 of this date! Nevertheless, this is one of the very finest half eagles to survive of any date, and certain to please a discriminating collector. This does not appear to be the Eliasberg coin, and it certainly stands on its own merits.
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.
