Lot 3231		Republic, Aes Grave Series, c. 289-245 BC. AE Cast Triens (102.05 g) minted at Rome. Thunderbolt; four pellets in field. Reverse: Dolphin right; underneath, four pellets. Cr. 14/3; Thurlow-Vecchi 3a. Even, moderately dark green patina. Very Fine. The cast coinages of the early Roman Republic are a rich area for future research. Their place of mintage, closer dating and greater hoard information contained in one reference source would fulfill a real need for this fascinating series, all of which can be considered rare. Lot 3232		Anonymous moneyer. AR Didrachm minted at Rome, 270-265 BC. Diademed head right of young Hercules, lion's skin and club over shoulder. Reverse: She-wolf standing right, suckling the twins Romulus and Remus. Sear 24; RSC Pre-Denarius 8; Cr. 20/1; Syd. 6. Toned. A pleasing example of the early didrachm coinage. Bold. Very Fine. Roman silver coinage began around 280 BC; involvement in the Pyrrhic War perhaps led to adopting the Greek didrachm that had long been in use in south Italy. The Roman didrachm continued to be minted into the second Punic War, when it was replaced by the denarius. While the earliest issues, which were military, reflected to some degree the style of their Greek models, this type was both one of the first to be struck at Rome herself and the first to display expressly Roman imagery. The moneyer was perhaps related to Herennius Siculus the Haruspex, who had been a loyal adherent of Gaius Gracchus; although the Herennii were probably of Etruscan origin, the tale of the Catanaean brothers, who saved their parents by carrying them to safety when Sicily's Mount Aetna erupted in 122 BC, was a famous example of pietas. Thorius Balbus was a native of Lanuvium, where Juno was worshipped as a protectress of women, particularly in pregnancy. The bull on the reverse is a pun on the moneyer's name. Calpurnius Piso propsed the annual celebration of the Ludi Apollinares, which were established in 212 BC; both the head of Apollo and the horseman are references to these games.
