Lot 3100
Thraco-Macedonian Tribes. The Edones. Getas. AR Oktadrachm (28.6 g) struck c. 480-460 BC. Herdsman in petasos guiding two bulls right. Reverse: Wheel with four spokes in square incuse. Kraay pl. 26, 483 (same dies); Babelon (Traité) --; Svoronos --. Among the finest known. An outstanding specimen of this extremely rare issue. Extremely Fine.

The Edoni were a Thracian tribe who occupied the region around the lower Strymon, east of Lake Kerkinitis. The town of Myrkinos was their chief center. All of the known Edonian coins are in the name of Getas. While these are typically inscribed around the incuse square of the reverse, following the example of Alexander I of Macedon, this remarkable issue bears the obverse legend, NOMISMA EDONEON BASILEOS GITA, "a coin of Getas, king of the Edones."

Thessaly, Kierion, c. 400-344 BC. AR Stater (11.88 g) struck c. 350 BC. Laureate head right of Zeus. Reverse: Asklepios seated left on rock; to left, snake in tree. Babelon (Traité IV) 507, pl. 289, 21 (same dies). Excellent metal. Struck from a forceful obverse die and a somewhat worn reverse die. The finest of four known examples of this type. Extremely Fine and very rare.

Located in the center of the southern plain of Thessaly, Kierion was home to a venerable sanctuary of Poseidon, and an ancient temple of Athena Itonia also lay in the neighborhood. As often happens, the local coinage attests to additional cults not mentioned by ancient authors in connection with the city. Its staters feature a head of Zeus strongly influenced by the tetradrachms of Philip II of Macedon, reflecting the dominant role played by Philip in the mid-fourth century as leader of the Thessalian Confederacy and victor in the Third Sacred War. The reverse depicts the healing god Asklepios, whose cult apparently originated in Thessaly, at Trikka, and spread from there to become one of the most influential of the Hellenistic world. This charming design has a narrative aspect and must surely allude to a myth, perhaps one explaining how the god formed his association with a snake. Asklepios was usually portrayed as a mature, bearded man, but a famous statue at Sikyon, by the sculptor Kalamis, showed him young and beardless, as he is here.

Arkadia, Heraia, c. 500-495 BC. AR Hemidrachm (2.98 g). Head of Hera to left, wearing stephane, beaded necklace and with her cloak folded over the top of her head. Reverse: EP surrounded by a beaded square within a shallow incuse square. Williams (Archaic) Period 1, 2f [O2/R2 = Jameson 2109 = Weber 4279 (same coin); BCD Peloponnesos 1350 (same coin)]; BMC 1; Boston MFA 1237; SNG Fitzwilliam 3878 (all same dies). Extremely rare. Beautifully toned and with an exceptional archaic head of Hera. Reverse struck lightly, otherwise Superb Extremely Fine and one of the finest known.

Of the previous owners of this coin, at least three were very distinguished collectors: BCD, Robert Jameson and Sir Hermann Weber. But its first known modern owner was an equally distinguished diplomat. Stratford Canning (1786-1833) was, most suitably, the first British ambassador to the new state of Greece (1828-1833). Previously he had been ambassador to Switzerland (1814-1820), the United States (1820-1824) and the Ottoman Empire (1825-1828 - he returned to Constantinople as ambassador from 1841 to 1858). Interestingly enough, there is a square in Athens named Plateia Kanningos - Canning Square - this was, however, not named after Stratford Canning, but after his cousin George Canning (1770-1827) who had been the British Foreign Secretary and had greatly supported the Greek Revolution.

BCD noted in his Coins of Peloponnesos (sold by LHS in Sale 96, lot 1350): I always thought of these stunningly archaic Hera heads as one of the prize groups of my Peloponnesian collection. If one would wish to define the word "archaic" what more appropriate than these almost grotesque, but at the same time divinely imposing profiles? Acquiring such a varied selection was not easy; I remember pleading with, almost begging, Mr. George Muller at Spink's to sell me two out of the three pieces just purchased from an old English collection and which were going to be offered to the legendary Mr. A, the greatest collector of Greek coins at that time. Mr. Muller was kind to me and I was able to purchase……. this coin.
Estimated Value $60,000 - 80,000.

This is an extremely rare issue, known as the "Persic" stater. One of only 14 surviving examples struck on this unusual weight standard, and one of only four in the name of this magistrate Samios. The normal struck coins of the 3rd century BC from Miletos were didrachms of about 6.5 grams. This coins was struck on a standard equivalent to two of the old Persian sigloi and therefore dubbed the "Persic" stater.
