Lot 2168
1915-S Panama-Pacific $2.50. NGC graded MS-63. Well struck and untoned. A satiny golden specimen with faint golden zephyr-like wisps of raised curls on both sides which the coin’s designer purposely chose to give a more rustic look than plain mint frost. Nicely struck for the date, too, certainly much finer than the even some in the higher grades we have encountered, and worthy of strong bidder consideration.

The 1915-S Panama-Pacific Exposition was held at a time in our history when the art world was casting aside the constraints of its previous Victorian ways. Many new devices were being tested on America's coinage: matte proofing, rims without denticles, artistic lettering, textured fields, and the like. As can be seen, the coins struck for this expo, such as this handsome Quarter Eagle, incorporate some of these changes. Instead of a more traditional design, the artist proposed an unusual motif of Columbia seated on a mythological hippocampus, half-horse, half-sea serpent. The eagle, too, was rendered in a new way not seen before on an American production coin. It was modeled upon a similar eagle seen on one of the rare Pattern issues.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,100.

Lot 2173
1917 McKinley Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Lovely golden toning, a very impressive Gem. There is much to say about the beautiful surfaces of this simply designed yet technically excellent design since they are nearly perfect, a quality most worthy of the grade. The mint frost glows with intensity over each side. There is just a bit of light patina as well. Nicely struck, and unlike some which have the faintest touch of weakness at McKinley’s temple, this exemplary coin is bold (PCGS # 7455) .
Estimated Value $1,400 - 1,500.

Lot 2174
1926 Sesquicentennial $2.50. PCGS graded MS-65. Nicely toned. Likely an early strike from new dies, just estimating from the crisp details. The surfaces are vivid gold in hue and drenched in luster. Here, too, we are struck by the nice, convincing design detail for all areas of this important Quarter Eagle Commemorative with not even the slightest amount of flatness on the features or Independence Hall building (PCGS # 7466) .
Estimated Value $1,700 - 1,800.

Lot 2175
1926 Sesquicentennial $2.50. PCGS graded MS-65. Light even golden toning. A satiny gem with richly imbued luster that graces the golden surfaces. Nicely struck for the design, indeed, about as fine as this Sesqui Commemorative is ever found. John R. Sinnock, the coin's designer, would have loved this one! (PCGS # 7466) .
Estimated Value $1,700 - 1,800.

1926 Sesquicentennial $2.50. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. A lovely coin. John R. Sinnock created both the Half Dollar and Quarter Eagle Commemoratives made to celebrate our 150th anniversary as a nation. The Quarter Eagle has a representation of Liberty on the obverse holding a torch and wearing a liberty cap denoting freedom. The building on the reverse is Independence Hall, Philadelphia, with a rising sun behind it. Initials JRS are to the right of the building. In all, 45,793 Quarter Eagles were sold for $4.00 apiece (PCGS # 7466) .
Estimated Value $800 - 850.
