1856 N-22 R5 Italic 5 VG10. Sharpness F15 or slightly better but cleaned and just starting to retone. Smooth and free of any other defects. Deserves a proper retoning.

1857 N-4 R1 Small Date EF40. Frosty steel brown and light chocolate. An attractive example for the grade, could easily be called EF45. The only marks are two tiny rim nicks at ST in STATES. LDS, die state (c). Holmes #1606.

  Pair of NGC graded Cents, 1843 & 1853. Includes 1843 N-15 R3 NGC graded AU55 and 1853 N-6 R1 NGC graded EF45. The first is frosty steel and dark chocolate, EF45 sharpness net EF40 for extremely faint roughness. The second was cleaned and retoned frosty bluish steel and olive with some reddish brown on the reverse and frosty tan in protected areas, EF40 sharpness net VF30. Both are from the later state of the dies. Lot of 2 coins.

  Trio of Cents, 1847-1855. Includes 1847 N-28 R3+ VF25, 1847 counterstamped with a small pig that has "PORK" on the body (3 times on the obverse, once on the reverse) Basal State-1, and 1855 N-3 R1 AU55. The first and last are very nice but the counterstamped piece, while very interesting, is banged up from the multiple strong stampings. Lot of 3 coins.

  Group of 8 Postcards from Walter Breen postmarked in 1959. Each card is addressed to an acquaintance in Beverly Hills, California. The cards are typed and signed by Walter, and the postmarks range from late 1958 to September 1959. On them he discusses a variety of topics, including his new book on US Half Cents, tips on cleaning and storing coins, and dishing the dirt on a few prominent coin dealers of the day. Interesting reading from one of the giants in numismatics. Lot of 8 cards.

  Group of 5 Letters from Walter Breen dated 27 October 1958 to 7 May 1959. Each letter is typed and was sent to an acquaintance in Los Angeles, California. The letters, similar to the postcards above, cover a variety of coin topics. Particular attention is devoted to issues regarding the pending Breen half cent book, but other topics include coin dealer ethics, identifying cartwheel luster, and an interesting first-person report on the famous 1959 Pennypacker auction of large cents. Some interesting, candid observations from one of the undisputed titans of numismatics. Lot of 5 letters.
