Raymond Massey. Five 8 x 10 in. negatives of Massey, two with his wife, accompanied by a positive copy of each (a positive copy is basically a xerox copy made with the sole purpose of showing what the negative images look like; photographic prints can be made from the negatives). "Abe Lincoln in Illinois" (1940) was written for Massey (1896-1983) by playwright Robert Sherwood. He played many authority figures and villains, and in later life (1961-66) played the kindly Dr. Gillespie in "Dr. Kildare."

Raymond Massey, John Houseman, and Charles Bickford. Three photos: 11 x 14 in. photo of stage and screen actor Raymond Massey (1896-1983). Original signature of photographer Herbert Mitchell at lower left. Massey won an Academy Award for his 1940 role in Abe Lincoln in Illinois. 8 x 10 in. photo of actor and film producer John Houseman (1902-1988), born Jacques Haussmann. Original signature of photographer Herbert Mitchell at lower left. Houseman was known for his collaboration with Orson Welles. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Professor Charles Kingsfield in the 1973 film The Paper Chase. Charles Bickford (1891-1967) 11 x 14 in. photo signed in the plate by the photographer. Bickford was a character actor who was nominated three times for Best Supporting Actor.

Shirley Boothe. 11 x 14 in. photo with original signature by photographer Herbert Mitchell. Boothe (1898-1982) received a Tony Award in 1950 for her role in the drama "Come Back, Little Sheba," then won both the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for the 1952 film version. She played the title role in the sitcom "Hazel," from 1961-1966, winning two Emmy Awards.

Sylvia Sidney. 11 x 14 in. photo with original pencil signature ("Mitchell NY") by photographer Herbert Mitchell. Matted and framed to an overall size of 14¾ x 17¾ in. A very young portrait of Miss Sidney (1910-1999), born Sophia Kosow, at the start of her New York stage career. Her Hollywood career took flight in 1931 when she was chosen to replace Clara Bow opposite Gary Cooper in "City Streets" and followed as the doomed factory worker in the film version of Theodore Dreiser's novel An American Tragedy. A lovely photo of Miss Sidney as an ingenue.

Bankhead (1902-1968) was a stage and screen actress known for her outrageous behavior, salty language, and numerous affairs with men and women.

Vincent Lopez. Five 8 x 10 in. negatives, three of Lopez alone, one of Lopez and his orchestra, and one a caricature of Lopez, each accompanied by a positive copy (a positive copy is basically a xerox copy made with the sole purpose of showing what the negative images look like; photographic prints can be made from the negatives). Lopez (1895-1975) was a bandleader and pianist who began broadcasting on radio in 1921 and continued through the 1940s, becoming one of America's most popular bandleaders. Beginning in 1941, his orchestra played at the Taft Hotel in Manhattan for 20 years. Musicians who played in his band included Artie Shaw, Xavier Cugat, Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Mike Mosiello and Glenn Miller.

Vintage Atlantic City Beach Photo: Al Jolson, Ruby Keeler, George Jessel & Others. A wonderful sepia-toned 8 x 10 in. group photo of 28 people on the sand at Atlantic City, c. 1930, all looking as if they are having a grand old time. In addition to the above-named stars, the group includes a young Milton Berle and his mother; Madge Evans; Ted Lewis; Marion Bent; Pat Rooney; Cliff Edward; Anatol Friedland; Ben Bernie; celebrity photographer Herbert Mitchell; and numerous others. The photo is faded on the left side and has a tear and a crease in the right margin. A modern print of the group is included.

William Morris & Three Other 1920s Caricatures From the Palace Theater in New York. Four drawings by artist/photographer Herbert Mitchell, of performers, primarily vaudeville acts, who appeared at the famous Palace Theatre in New York. From 1913 through the 1920s, the Palace was the most desired booking in the country. The caricatures are 11 x 14 in., all drawn by Mitchell and signed "Mitchell -- Strand,"; they are framed to 14¼ x 17¼ in. The caricatures are of: William Morris, Jr.; The Cansinos, whose daughter would become Rita Hayworth; Leo Carrillo; and Eddie Leonard the Minstrel. William Morris recognized Herbert Mitchell's talent as an artist and photographer and hired him away from the Palace to do photography for the William Morris Agency. All are in fine condition.

Sothern was born Harriet Arlene Lake (1909-2001). She gained success with her "Maisie" comedies and earned four Emmy nominations for the television series "Private Secretary" (1953-57) and "The Ann Sothern Show" (1958-61).

George ("Georgie) Jessel (1898-1981), was an American illustrated song "model," actor, singer, songwriter, and Academy Award-winning movie producer. He was often called the "Toastmaster General of the United States," for his frequent role as the master of ceremonies at political and entertainment gatherings.
