Louis Raemaekers (1869-1956) was a Dutch painter and cartoonist for the Amsterdam Telegraaf during World War I. Noted for his anti-German stance, his graphic cartoons depicted the rule of the German military in Belgium and portrayed the Germans as barbarians and Kaiser Wilhelm II as an ally of Satan. The extent of Raemaekers' influence was such that the Germans offered a 12,000 guilder reward for him, dead or alive and forced the Dutch government to place him on trial for endangering Dutch neutrality; he was acquitted by a jury. Because of the bounty on his head, Raemaekers went to England and his work was published there in The Times. Exhibitions of his work were held all over Europe and the United States.

[World War I] French Poster by Steinlen: "En Belgique les Belges ont faim". Paris: Lapina, [1915], 49½ x 34 in. Linen backed. "In Belgium the Belgians are hungry…." Touting an artistic lottery to raise money to feed the people of Belgium. Looking wan, a group of hungry Belgians hold food pails. Minor professional fold repair. Swiss-born artist Steinlen Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923) was politically opposed to the war and made posters against it. Here he shows his sympathy for the starving populace of Belgium.

When the German Army got bogged down in trench warfare in Belgium, it seized Belgian food supplies to feed its troops. This and the Allied blockade of Germany and German-occupied countries, which prevented Belgian from importing food, had the populace on the verge of starvation. Thus, France's effort to feed her neighbor. Note: The CRB (Committee for Relief in Belgium), headed by Herbert Hoover, fed 11 million people in Belgium and northern France over a four-year period--a gargantuan effort.

[World War I] "Gee!! I Wish I Were A Man I'd Join the Navy" by Howard Chandler Christy. Original World War I poster, 1917, 40 x 26¼ in. Linen backed. The sassy miss in a sailor's uniform embodies the "Christy Girl." She urges, "Be A Man And Do It United States Navy Recruiting Station 1003 Main Street, Hartford." Actually, the lass pictured here DID join the Navy: the story goes that Bernice Smith, the model for this poster, had announced her desire to join the Navy in exactly the terms stated on the poster. Christy overheard her and promptly painted her in sailor's blues. Ten days after she was painted, Smith enlisted in the Navy, serving as a yeoman for three years.

By the time of World War I, Christy (1873-1952) was one of the most famous artists and illustrators in the world. His work appeared in many books and in all the major magazines of the day - Harpers, Scribner's, Century, McClures, etc. The posters that he created for the war effort, especially for the Red Cross and Navy, are some of the most popular war posters.

At the bottom is: "Promotion For Anyone Enlisting, Apply Any Recruiting Station Or Postmaster." The "Christy Girl" jauntily posed in this poster, Helen O'Neill, was a civilian employee of the Navy who enlisted as soon as women were permitted. When women reservists were allowed in the Marine Corps, O'Neill transferred and became Deputy Director of the Women Marines, eventually retiring as a lieutenant colonel. A beautiful poster.
