Germany. Medal, 1939. Kienast-565. Cast Bronze. Oval 75 x 110 mm. 'Admiral Graf Spee', the armor-clad cruiser's self-sinking at La Plata on November 17, 1939. Obverse: Busts of Admiral Spee and Captain Langsdorff, facing. Reverse: Battle cruiser Admiral Graf Spee sinking below waves. This is the variety without the Spende 1940 in the field. Extremely Fine.

* After a sea battle with British warships before the South-American coast, Captain Langsdorff ordered the self-sinking of the cruiser near the coast of Montevideo. Obverse shows Admiral Count Spee, the World War I naval hero after whom the cruiser was named and Captain Langsdorff the World War II commander of the vessel. The reverse reads in the exergue "By order of the Führer self-sunk at the La Plata on November 17, 1939." In the field, "Donation 1940," indicating that this medal was sold in order to raise money for a fund, set-aside to rebuild another. Admiral Graf Spee cruiser. (This medal is also known without the word Spende 1940 (Donation) in the field to the right).

Executed in Holland by Peter van Abeele, to commemorate the embarkation, on June 2, 1660, of Charles II and his Court at Scheveningen, on his restoration to England. Three-quarters bust of Charles II draped facing right. Reverse: Fame with ribbon inscribed flying over a fleet under sail. Very Fine.

Superbly well struck, and superior to other specimens which have been offered for sale in recent times. This was the official issue for the coronation, engraved by J. Roettier, and one of the toughest British coronation medals to obtain in top grade. NGC graded MS-62.
