Kingdom of Macedon. Demetrios Poliorketes, 306-283 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.11 g) minted in Macedon (possibly Amphipolis) c. 291-290 BC. Diademed head right of Demetrios Poliorketes, wearing bull's horn. Reverse: Poseidon seated left on a rock; he holds aplustre and trident; in central left field, Phrygian helmet. Newell (The Coinages of Demetrius Poliorcetes) 136 (plate XIV, 3). Rare. A few spots of encrustations, mainly on the reverse. Outstanding portrait. Extremely Fine.

At this time Thebes was under siege by Demetrios, and eventually fell to his forces. All of Alexander III's heirs, including Demetrios, spent their lives guarding borders and attacking neighbors in their lust for power. Alexander's dream was lost.

Akko is one of the few mints of Alexander to date their coins. Emissions from this mint have a definite place in a Biblical coin collection, as well as in Alexander groupings that show different artistic styles. Phoenician issues can emphasize globular elements and exhibit a roughness and non-yielding portrait of Herakles.

Excellent metal, well centered with lovely delicate iridescent toning. A beautifully perserved specimen. Superb Extremely Fine.

The Chimaera, according to the myth related by Homer, was a fire-breathing beast composed of the body of a lioness with a tail that terminated in a snak'e head and the head of a fire-breathing goat that arose from its back.

Attis, an uncommon deity as portrayed on ancient coins, was from the province of Phrygia and was associated with Cybele, Great Mother of the Gods. It is still very apparent that these Cyzicene staters were very valuable commodities when held in the hand, and their diversity of types and charismatic nature set them apart from other ancient coins.
