1886. NGC graded Proof 65. A fully white Gem Proof. Delicate satin to frosted white devices resonate off of the mirror surface of this near-pristine Gem. In former days, the luster was enough to determine a coin's status. But today, just as important is the strike: there is no deviation in the sharp relief seen, not even in the centers of the coin. 1888. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. An untoned cameo gem example. As befits the method of Proof production that was in vogue in 1888 at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin is uniformly sharp and gleaming, brilliant with beautiful cameo contrast between the fields and devices. The strike shows all the fine detail in the devices, including hair curls and the eagle’s breast detail. Furthermore, are no marks, spots, or other blemishes for the PR65 designation. 1888. NGC graded MS-67. A fully blast white Superb Gem. Both sides are remarkably lustrous with full-moon whiteness and cartwheel spin. 1889. Proof 64+ Cameo. CAC Approved. A gorgeous brilliant white cameo example with hints of light tone starting to form. 1889-O. PCGS graded MS-65. A frosty mint gem with stunning multi-color rainbow toning across the obverse. Metal flow enhances the glittering mint luster that covers the surfaces, giving the coin a shimmering, glowing appearance as it propels the colorful toning into your field of vision. The original mint brilliance is only interrupted by an occasional out of the way bagmark. Both the peripheries and the central reverse are detailed and close to 100% crisp for their sharpness of strike, which is a forceful reminder in a coin from this Southern mint that it is quality that counts. 1890. NGC graded MS-65. The obverse displays lovely rainbow toning. The underpinning silvery luster on both sides is full with a strong and beautiful satin texture. This is a decidedly well-struck example with commanding details, unlike most in the 1890 to 1897 period. It has no bothersome abrasions or points of wear, which increases the coin’s prestige, nor did the dies leave behind a less than rigid impression of softness in the centers. The centers are fully defined. Everything sharp. Pop 271; 6 finer (PCGS # 7196) . Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,100. Ex: Rainbow Collection. 1890-CC. Tail Bar. PCGS graded MS-64. Popular Top 100 Morgan Dollar die variety. 1891. NGC graded MS-65 Star. Both sides display intense blue toning. Fully lustrous - an important and rare feature for this not all that well preserved issue -- the surfaces display dominant cartwheel sheen which supports the intense, iridescent color all the more. Combined, they almost mesmerize the onlooker! Almost everyone likes to seek a coin that was struck with precision and care by the dies in the outer margins and on all legends that you'd expect; here too, the inner designs were also left crisply detailed by the imprint of the dies. 1892. NGC graded MS-65. Lovely obverse blue toning. The reverse shows gold toning. Fully brilliant otherwise underneath this lovely color, the surfaces display few noticeable abrasions; the luster stands out with frosty cartwheel splendor. What’s more, the piece is struck with almost scientific precision on the highest points of the design, something not often seen in dates in the early 1890s for some reason. 1892-CC. PCGS graded MS-63+. A nice white coin. And a lustrous example that has a above-average detail and strike with a bare few faint luster grazes in the field consistent with MS63 grade. The coin is carefully preserved. While some CC-mint Morgan Dollars (such as the 1882-1884 issues) are readily obtainable at the choice and gem grade level, the 1892-CC is not. This is not to say that Mint State examples are rare, but, rather, that most are noticeably abraded (PCGS # 7214) . Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,600. 1893-CC. PCGS graded MS-63 PQ. CAC Approved. Frosty and mostly white. A nice example.
After the 1889-CC and 1879-CC, the 1893-CC is the most elusive Morgan Dollar from the Carson City Mint. It is also a historically significant coin as the final Silver Dollar produced at the fabled Nevada branch mint--a fact that only enhances its popularity among specialists. This is an issue that is not represented by quantities of Uncirculated survivors in today's hobby. On the contrary, when Mint State coins are available, it will usually be one at a time, and the typical representative is noticeably bagmarked and confined to the MS60-MS62 grade range. A very choice coin.
When President Grover Cleveland was sworn in to his second term in office in early 1893, he told the Treasury Department to close the Carson Mint (as a budget cutting measure). The short history of this illustrious Western minting facility is peppered with stories of great rarities coming off the coining presses (PCGS # 7222) . Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000. 1893-S. PCGS graded Good-4. Evenly worn, problem-free and lightly toned. Popular Key Date of which only 100,000 were produced. The early 1890s saw a drop-off in the coinage of silver dollars, with the most notable low-mintage years being 1893-95. By 1896, things had turned around and production levels increased once more, leaving behind the scarce 1893-S as a desirable rarity (PCGS # 7226) . Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,300. 1894. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo. CAC Approved. Untoned and very choice. Only 972 pieces struck. The 1894 has always been one of the most revered dates in the Proof series of Morgan Dollars. Similar to the 1901, the 1894 is a difficult issue to obtain in high grade Uncirculated condition. For this reason, there has always been significant date pressure on Proofs of these issues. This is an exceptionally choice, cameo coin that is deeply mirrored and even shows desirable frosting on the devices (indicated by the cameo contrast acknowledged on the holder). Fully and intricately detailed also with only minimal loss of detail over the ear of Liberty. Pop 20; 14 finer (PCGS # 87329) . Estimated Value $2,900 - 3,000. 1894-O. PCGS graded MS-64. Frosty and totally white. Dripping with lustrous eye appeal. Quite difficult to acquire in such high grade. All but unobtainable as a Gem, the 1894-O is one of the foremost Morgan Dollar rarities in the finer Mint State grades. It is true there were 1.7 million coins were produced, however locating an attractive representative is anything but easy. Most coins are plagued by poor strike details, while the luster quality also seems sub-par for the type. This is not quite a fully struck coin, but all features save for those over the central highpoints are exceedingly bold. Even the foal points are not all that softly impressed, while the luster is vibrant, purest white and with a frosty finish. A very desirable example that would fit nicely in even the most discerning numismatist's collection. Pop 278; 41 finer (PCGS # 7230) . Estimated Value $8,000 - 8,500. 1894-S. NGC graded MS-65. The reverse displays wonderful blue and golden colors. The obverse has light gold tones around the edges. The silvery hue reciprocates between levels of frost and satin-texture on this handsome ’94-S Morgan. Lustrous and well struck with rocking-fresh surfaces. From the luster, we next take stock of the details of the design. Given the proper amount of strike pressure, the coin was fully brought up by the dies. Critics may point to a couple of fused hair curls above Liberty’s ear, but as this is seen almost across the board on Morgan dollars in the 1890s, we can overlook it as being of little importance.
