Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 48
1794 C-3a R5 G5. Small Edge Letters. Misaligned Obverse Die. Sharpness F15 but lightly corroded on all but the highpoints, which are smooth. There are minute traces of reddish scale in some of the protected areas but no verdigris and only a few trivial contact marks. A small rim nick over the second T in STATES is a good identifying mark. The date is weak but readable with some effort while the legends are relatively strong everywhere except along the left edge of the reverse where those details did not strike up. Glossy dark olive with lighter brown and chocolate toning on the highpoints. Struck with the obverse misaligned to K-8 (which caused weakness on the date). Weight 98.8 grains.
Estimated Value $400-UP.

1794 C-5a R4+ F12. Small Edge Letters. Glossy reddish chocolate brown with lighter brown toning covering the highpoints. The surfaces are attractive and the two-tone appearance accents the details and adds to the eye appeal. The only marks are a few trivial rim nicks, including a one left of the bottom of the cap and a couple more at AM in AMERICA. The date is strong and the legends are complete. LDS, Manley state 2.0. The die clashmarks at the neck are clear and the reverse is rotated 60 degrees CW from a normal head-to-foot die orientation. Weight 95.9 grains.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.

1794 C-9 R2 F12. Several points sharper and quite attractive for the grade, but there are a few light scratches in the field before the portrait. Otherwise this piece is choice, and the fine scratches blend perfectly into the glossy medium brown and light chocolate toning. MDS, Manley state 2.0. The die crack from the dentils to the middle of the cap is light. Weight 107.1 grains.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

1795 C-4 R3 Punctuated Date, Plain Edge G6. Clipped Planchet. A couple points sharper but there are two very dull vertical scratches in the field before the neck. No additional defects of any significance. Lightly cleaned and retoned a slightly glossy chocolate and steel brown blending to darker olive brown. The date is clear although the punctuation (comma between the 1 & 7) is very faint, and the legends are clear except for the usual weakness in the center of the reverse. A straight-edge planchet clip (end of strip clip) affects the dentils at the top of the obverse and comes close to touching the base of the fraction on the reverse. Weight 73.8 grains.

1795 C-4 R3 Punctuated Date, Plain Edge AG3. Flipover Double Strike. Sharpness VG8 but banged up a bit and plugged at BE in LIBERTY. Both BE and the fraction have been expertly reengraved and you could easily miss the fact that this piece was plugged. No corrosion or verdigris, and the color is a glossy reddish chocolate brown. What makes this piece special is that it was struck two times, and the planchet was flipped over between those impressions. The first strike was about 10% off center while the second was centered. Clear evidence of the initial strike shows on both sides, including "ES" of STATES at the 1 in the date, "OF" in the field under the cap, and "AME" on the cap. Removed from an ANACS slab graded "Fine Details Net VG8, Damaged" with no mention of having been plugged. The "Flipover Dbl Struck" feature is also noted on the ANACS label. Weight 80.4 grains.
Estimated Value $400-UP.

1795 C-6a R2 Without Pole, Thin Planchet AG3. Struck over Talbot Allum & Lee Cent. Sharpness VG7 but there are some strong rim dents on both sides and the reverse is rough from patches of shallow pitting. No verdigris. The rim dents over LIBE have been smoothed down a bit, and the work displays a lack of skill. Partly glossy chocolate brown and olive, the highpoints a slightly lighter shade of brown. The date is weak but complete and easily readable and the legends are strong where not affected by the pitting. Struck over a cut-down Talbot Allum & Lee Cent with strong undertype (ship rigging) from the host cent at the top of the reverse. Weight 84.1 grains.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

1796. With pole. Edwards Copy. PCGS graded MS-66 Brown. A gorgeous reddish-brown example. It is believed that the Edwards copies were produced in the mid-1860s, either in London or New York. Breen notes that "the origin of this copy has been kept obscure." He points out that the first auction appearance was in W. Elliot Woodward's April 1866 sale, lot 944. It is thought that the copies were produced by Dr. Francis S. Edwards, based on contemporary commentary of E.J. Attinelli, who said "to him was attributed the appearance of several counterfeit pieces of rare American coins and medals."

In his Half Cent Encyclopedia, Breen described 10 distinct examples in his Condition Census for the variety. Half a dozen years later, R. Tettenhorst described four additional pieces that had appeared since Breen's reference was published. He also noted duplications in Breen's roster, and remarked that one of those in the earlier list is actually an electrotype of the Edward's copy. Among the new pieces was one described as "Uncirculated, with some red. In the possession of a Pennsylvania dealer in the summer of 1982." Pop 2; none finer.
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.

1797 C-1 R2 Fair-2. 1 Above 1 Variety. Struck over Talbot Allum & Lee Cent. Lightly cleaned and retoned glossy steel brown and chocolate. No roughness but both sides are covered with myriad hairline scratches. The date is mostly gone but the 7 remains visible, and no more than a third of the legends can be made out. Very late die state (VLDS) from a shattered obverse die. The die crack at UNI is strong and there appears to be an additional crack through UNI parallel to the usual one. Struck over a TAL Cent with undertype visible at the top of the reverse. Weight 91.4 grains.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

1797 C-2 R3 Centered Head PCGS graded F12. Slightly glossy dark steel brown and chocolate with slightly lighter steel brown toning covering the devices. The two-tone appearance helps accent the details and enhances the eye appeal. The surfaces are covered with extremely faint roughness that dulls the gloss, but the planchet appears nice and smooth to the unaided eye. No verdigris, and the only mark is a very light, thin scuff into the field from the hair under the cap, and this mark barely alters the toning. The date is strong and the legends are complete except for the usual weakness at ICA and HALF CENT. Our grade is net VG8.
Estimated Value $600-UP.

1797 C-3b R4 Lettered Edge Fair-2. The obverse is slightly sharper but the reverse is weaker, and both sides show minor porosity scattered about. No verdigris and the only marks are a few old hairline scratches on the obverse that blend with the toning. Slightly glossy dark olive brown with lighter chocolate toning covering the devices. The two-tone contrast helps accent the designs. The date is complete and easily readable but the legends are mostly gone. The edge lettering is complete and easily readable, but the letters are taller than the planchet thickness, as usual for these thin lettered edge planchets. Weight 71.3 grains.
Estimated Value $600-UP.
