Lot 1702
1909-D. PCGS graded MS-63. A nice frosty coin. Higher grade specimens are much scarcer than anyone believed 20 years ago when an occasional roll of 1909-D Half Eagles would surface at a coin show and get graded and distributed to collectors. Today we see increased interest in choice-grade examples. Ones like this handsome MS63 with its gleaming luster are highly prized (PCGS # 8514) .
Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,600.

1913. ICG graded MS-62. Of particular interest to historians is the year 1913. Three major events occurred: establishment of the Federal Reserve System bank cartel, income tax, and direct-election of Senators, the latter two being the result of amendments to the constitution. Twenty years after this half eagle was struck, 1933 to be exact, the authorities, embarrassed by their mismanagement of the economy, were forced to seize the gold and debase the dollar unit of account against it.
Estimated Value $700 - 750.

Lot 1733
1915-S. PCGS graded MS-62+ CAC Approved. Well struck and delicately toned with lots of mint luster. A Premium Quality example and a very rare coin in full Mint State. Only 2600 examples are estimated to have survived in all grades. A paltry original mintage of 164,000 pieces should be a readily identifiable indicator that the 1915-S is one of the key issues in the entire Indian Half Eagle series of 1908-1929. The rarity of the '15-S is perhaps no more dramatized than at the Mint State level. Even so-so BU representatives are scarce, and examples higher than MS60 are seldom encountered in today's market.

Easily among the more important 1915-S fives extant, this lovely near-choice specimen would serve as a main attraction in any advanced Indian half eagle collection. Both sides are full with frosty-textured features. The strike is overall sharp, but it does wane a bit at the lowermost feathers in the Native American's headdress (as frequently seen on survivors of the issue). There are not many abrasions, as befits the assigned grade, and none are worthy of singular concern. Bumping up against the choice level, this important coin is close to a Condition Census item of this challenging delivery in the 20th century gold series. The S mintmark is well impressed. Pop 2; 35 finer (PCGS # 8531) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.
