Devices are sharp in all areas, as struck, as desired by collectors, which the grading service has taken into consideration in assigning the grade, as also desired by collectors. 1909 is, as a rule, scarcer than some of the P-mint dates on either side, and is certainly much rarer in Gem MS65 than the 1925-29 issues. The pleasingly bright and lustrous surfaces deserve special mention, both sides are warmly colored in orange-gold hues. A solidly graded, premium quality Gem, this coin displays impressive striking definition for a second-year issue from this Indian design. This is also to say that the strike is full, including those few feather veins over stretching to the outer reaches of the war bonnet which on some mid-teens dates can come weak (PCGS # 7940) . Lot 1285		1910. NGC graded Proof 64. Untoned and well struck. Mintages expanded in 1910 to 682, nevertheless, not many have been found in choice Proof 64 quality. This is certainly one of a select group which is among the most attractive Roman Finish dates (1909-10). No signs of handling marks and the surfaces are quite well preserved. The only faint disturbance would be a couple of nearly invisible hairlines, mostly in the fields. Don't expect to find a better one without some hard searching and an expanded rare coin budget, as this is a really beautiful, and choice coin. Perfectly struck and a visual masterpiece of Bella Lyon Pratt's incuse design. Pop 32; 69 finer (PCGS # 7959) . Historic note: After criticism arose following release of the 1908 sandblast Proof gold coins, the Mint altered its procedure. It dropped the sandblast style, and introduced the satin finish in 1909 and 1910. The satin surface (Charles E. Barber called it "bright") was produced by fresh dies used in the Mint's medal press. The surface is the result of buffing the hubs to remove cutting burs from the reducing lathe. The 1908 and 1911-15 sandblast pieces were made by taking a satin Proof coin and lightly sandblasting it. We call these "matte Proofs" today. The officials at the Philadelphia mint decided they could not make brilliant Proofs like those in the previous Liberty head series, and wanted something distinctive for collectors. After the sandblast in 1908 failed to satisfy, this satin finish was tried, but shortly thereafter, the sandblast technique was once again put into use. Estimated Value $10,000 - 11,000. Lot 1286		1910. PCGS graded MS-65. Lovely gold toning on both sides. Strikingly beautiful rolling-fresh finish, untouched by mishandling and almost exactly as when first issued, awash in originality. Difficult to find and on a par with 1909, sometimes soft-edged devices and lettering throughout the centers are typical on this issue, as commonly seen; however, a small percentage of this year's production is found with enough convincing detail to be called above average and this 1910 Quarter Eagle is such coin! Lot 1287		1910. PCGS graded MS-65. Lovely mint bloom colors of golden-olive and light gold. A very attractive gold-surfaced Gem whose high-end depth of detail in the strike complements the equally fresh mint bloom. Where an ineffectual imprint is often left by the rebound of the dies that struck many of this year's coinage as well as some other dates in the Indian series, the opposite is present here: devices show fine clarity of detail including in the centers as well as the feather ends. Bidders be cautioned, you may face stiff competition. The obverse portrays an actual Native American chief, Brule Lakota Chief Hollow Horn Bear, who had taken part in Theodore Roosevelt's inaugural parade, March 4, 1905. Boston sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt modeled him for the 1908 quarter eagles and half. The unusual design on these stems from the so-called sunken relief. Pop 73; 7 finer in 66 (PCGS # 7941) . A problem-free Gem with luster racing across the surface, vivid and exciting in appearance when one considers the "average" Mint State�s appearance. What's more, the fields acquit themselves nicely in terms of the fewness of marks. Further on point, a blunt impression is sometimes left by the recoil of the dies that struck this year's coinage; just the same, we can report that this �11-P specimen, unlike the others, is outstanding in its detail and sharpness (PCGS # 7942) . Lot 1292		1911-D. PCGS graded MS-65. Only 55,600 minted of which only 7,833 examples are estimated to have survived. Well struck with lovely golden toning. It is a sign of the magnitude of this Quarter Eagle collection that we are offering not one, not two, but fifteen full-scale MS65 Gem-quality examples of the Indian Quarter Eagles, with this lot comprising the crème de la crème of the series, the legendary 1911-D Indian $2.50. The PCGS-certified piece in this lot is fully impressed with sharp definition touching not only the central-reverse highpoints, but also the D mintmark on the same side and the lowermost feathers in the obverse headdress. Both sides are fully lustrous although, in observance of the standards of the issue, the finish is not as vibrant as a Liberty head $2.50 from the 1900-1907 period; instead, the luster has a wonderful if slightly granular texture. The color is a rich golden shade that, at certain angles, reveals slight mingling of reddish-gold tinting. There are no disturbing abrasions or other blemishes, indeed the most important attribute in establishing the desirability of this coin for inclusion in an advanced Registry collection of 20th century gold.
