1812 S-291 R2 Turban Head, Small Date NGC graded XF Details with scratches. Lightly cleaned and retoned frosty dark steel brown and chocolate with slightly lighter steel brown toning in some of the protected areas where you find attractive cartwheel luster. This piece looks quite nice to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals microscopic scratches on the highpoints of the portrait plus some dull ones around ONE on the reverse. No hint of corrosion or verdigris. MDS. Struck slightly off center to K-6. Our grade is net VF20. The attribution is noted on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $400-UP.

There is a small pitmark between the I and C in AMERICA but the rest of the planchet is smooth. Rather glossy bluish steel and olive brown. Struck slightly off center to K-5.
Estimated Value $200-UP.

Lot 340
1814 S-294 R1 Turban Head, Crosslet 4 PCGS graded AU50. Frosty olive brown and steel with reddish chocolate brown toning in protected areas on the left side of the obverse. No roughness or notable marks, but this cent has gone without a bath for at least a century and the luster is rather hidden under a thin layer of dirt and oxidation. A small spot of shallow black crud in the dentils at star 7 is a good identifying mark until a bath. MDS. Struck slightly off center to K-3. Our grade is VF35, perhaps slightly better without the dirt. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

1814 S-294 R1 Turban Head, Crosslet 4 EF40. Five points sharper but there are a couple thin nicks on the chin and a few faint scratches above CEN in CENT. These marks blend perfectly into the frosty dark olive brown and steel toning and the eye appeal of this piece is excellent. Sharply struck MDS, Breen state II, showing faint die clashmarks on both sides.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
