Lot 4151
Kushan Kingdom. Vima Kadphises, c. AD 100-128. Gold Stater (8.01 g). Helmeted bust left of king resting on clouds. Reverse: Standing figure of Siva holding trident and goat-skin. MK 19; cf. Rosenfield plate II, 22; Mitchiner (ACW) 3004 var. Excellent detail, well centered on a full flan; Superb Extremely Fine.

As we have all seen recently, the prices of high-grade, regularly issued ancient coins have substantially risen in value. This is the time when astute collectors look for more esoteric areas into which to expand their collecting spheres. The Kushan Empire is such an area. The coins are properly considered as a specialty, and yet their Greek connection through Alexander the Great's exploits is firmly established. The diversity of the reverse deities and personifications matches well with those of the Roman world. Earlier issues, such as this gold stater, show finesse of style and a general care in striking.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.
