Lot 478
1794 C-2a R2+ ANACS graded VG details net G4 for corrosion. Small Edge Letters. Slightly glossy dark olive with lighter chocolate brown toning covering the devices on both sides. The fields and protected areas are covered with light roughness and several old scratches, most of which are lost in the patina. A scratch at IT in UNITED and another over ME in AMERICA are the ones visible to the unaided eye. No verdigris. The date and most of the legends are easily readable. Our grade is net AG3+, close to the slab grade. The attribution is noted on the ANACS label.

Lot 479
1794 C-3a R5 G4+. Small Edge Letters. A couple points sharper, especially on the reverse, but there are a half dozen pitmarks on the obverse, the largest of these being a couple in the field before the neck. In addition there are numerous thin rim nicks around the obverse and a deep nick at the leaf left of the H in HALF. Rounding out the defects is a mint-made thin planchet lamination from the rim just above the cap through LIBE. Otherwise the planchet is smooth and the color is an attractive glossy light chocolate and steel brown with darker chocolate toning in protected areas. The date is easily readable although the 1 is weak, and the legends are strong. An imperfect but acceptable example of this very tough die variety. EDS, Manley state 1.0, prior to the delicate bulge that forms right of the date. Weight 100.2 grains.
Estimated Value $350-UP.

1794 C-4a R3 F12. Small Edge Letters. Sharpness near EF40 but the planchet is dull and covered with uniform microscopic roughness. No contact marks or verdigris. The best identifying feature of this piece is a slightly beveled planchet at the rim over UNI. Frosty dark steel and olive with slightly lighter chocolate toning on the highpoints of the obverse. Sharply struck M-LDS, Manley state 3.0. The die clashmarks are sharp and the bulge under the cap is strong. Weight 105.2 grains.

Rare LDS, Manley state 2.0, with strong die clashmarks before the neck plus others around the portrait. Weight 110.1 grains.

1794 C-6a R5+ G4. Small Edge Letters. Several points sharper but there are a few shallow pitmarks or planchet voids on both sides, mostly at TY into the field before the face and at S-OF on the reverse. No verdigris, just some dull contact marks on both sides, none notable. The center of the reverse appears to bulge outward almost imperceptibly, but the date and legends are complete and easily readable, including HALF CENT. Mostly glossy dark chocolate brown with lighter steel brown and chocolate toning covering the devices. This example offers the eye appeal of a piece several points better than the net grade might suggest. The always-present bulge right of the date is strong and the reverse is rotated 25 degrees CW. Weight 99.9 grains. A quite acceptable lower-grade example of this very rare variety.
Estimated Value $500-UP.

1794 C-8 R5 G4. The obverse is slightly better but the reverse is weaker, mostly as a result of that die being badly misaligned to K-5 causing an uneven strike. No corrosion or verdigris. A short, dull scratch in the field before the nose catches your eye, and there are a few less-obvious rim nicks on both sides. Rather glossy dark chocolate brown and olive. The date is clear. LDS, Manley state 2.0. The die crack down through the second T in STATES is strong and the reverse is rotated 30 degrees CCW. Weight 100.8 grains.
Estimated Value $400-UP.

1795 C-6a R2 Without Pole G6. Clamshell Lamination. Glossy chocolate brown. A couple small rim nicks at the bottom of the obverse and a tiny rim bruise opposite the forehead are the notable signs of contact. The surfaces are smooth and quite attractive for the grade. The planchet is split, a so-called "clamshell" lamination, on the left side. The clamshell affects UNITED ST but everything remains readable. An extremely rare type of mint error. 1800 C-1 R2. NGC graded EF-40. Frosty dark chocolate and steel brown. No corrosion and just a few minor marks, including a small rim nick under the right end of the date and a couple more over S-O at the top of the reverse. There is some crud caked into the protected areas on both sides, and the eye appeal of this piece may benefit from the careful removal of the dirt. M-LDS, Manley state 4.0. The curl left of the date is open due to excessive die polishing. Our grade is net VF25, but an additional 5+ points may be justified if the crud is removed. 1803 C-1/2/4 Obverse Brockage. NGC graded VG-10. Chocolate brown with darker olive brown toning in protected areas. The surfaces are covered with very shallow corrosion, but there are no significant marks, verdigris, or other defects. The surfaces are rather dull thanks to the fine roughness, but a thin layer of dirt and oxidation is also present. A light brushing may bring some life back to the surfaces. This piece is a slightly off center obverse brockage. It was struck between the obverse die and the obverse of a previously struck half cent that failed to eject from the press. Both the normal and incuse brockage impressions are strong and slightly off center to K-5.5. In addition the incuse impression is rotated about 15 degrees relative to the normal strike. This obverse die was used to strike the C-1, C-2, and C-4 die varieties. The sharpness of the dentils on the normal obverse side suggests the die was relatively new when this piece was struck, and that would tie it to the C-2 die marriage, which came first. Regardless, this is decent example of a very rare type of mint error. Our grade is VG10 sharpness net VG7.

1804 C-10 R1 VF35. Frosty steel brown and chocolate blending to light olive brown on the reverse. Flowline luster covers the fields and protected areas, especially on the reverse.
