Lot 4088
Jewish Coinage. Kings of Chalcis. Herod, 41-48 CE. AE 21 (half denomination). Diademed bust right of Herod of Chalcis. Reverse: Inscription within wreath. AJC II plate 29, 2 (this coin illustrated); TJC 363 (this coin illustrated); H-1253 (this coin illustrated). Extremely rare. About Fine/About Very Fine with clear portrait.

Herod of Chalcis, brother of Agrippa I, minted coins of three different values, of which this specimen is the middle or half denomination. The rarity of this coin is well shown by the fact that this particular example is photographed in various references. Herod was appointed as king of Chalcis by the Roman emperor Claudius. The extremely rare coins of Salome were issued later by her husband, Aristobulus, son of Herod of Chalcis.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 6,000.

Temple vessel (omer cup?) with medium plain rim and pearl on either side; above, date and surrounding Palaeo-Hebrew inscription "Shekel of Israel". Reverse: Stem with three budding pomegranates; around, Palaeo-Hebrew inscription "Jerusalem is Holy". AJC II, plate 17, 3a; TJC 189 (this obverse die); H-1354. Well struck, Nearly Extremely Fine.

The triple pomegranate branch measures the traditional diameter of the omer cup, thereby unifying the types while retaining the duality of depictions.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,500.

Jewish Coinage. Roman Judaea Capta Series. Vespasian, 69-79 CE. Fourrée Denarius of c. 71 CE (2.85 g). Laureate head right of Vespasian. Reverse: Draped woman (Judaea personified) to left of palm tree; IVDAEA DEVICTA. RIC 1120; H-1488. Obverse edge irregularity at 9 o'clock. Very Fine.

Fourrées are ancient counterfeits made to deceive, whose composition is a copper core within a silver jacket. The jacket wears first, causing the copper's verdigris to be apparent within the surface craters. Some coin types, such as this one, are seen more frequently as fourrées. Of the 12-15 specimens of this IVDAEA DEVICTA type that this cataloguer has examined, all have been fourrées!
Estimated Value $500 - 600.
