Lot 1750
1862, $1 United States Note. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. Fr-16. . KL-3. As pretty an example of this early Greenback as we can recall seeing, this near-Superb example boasts extremely broad margins for the type and the paper surfaces are strictly original in every sense of the word. It is boldly embossed, almost perfectly centered, and would match up aesthetically with any other example of this design in any grade. A splendid example for the Fr. number or type note collector, and nearly impossible to best as PCGS Currency has graded just two examples better (both 67PPQ) to date.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 9,000.

1869, $1 United States Note. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64. Fr-18. . KL-5. This Rainbow Ace has terrific colors and eye appeal, and centering appears to be all that limits the grade. One can only guess as to why this note didn't receive an "EPQ" designation, as the paper surfaces appear purely original through the holder.

Lot 1754
1869, $1 United States Note. PCGS Choice About New 58. Fr-18. . KL-5. A couple of trivial corner folds appear to be all that separate this lovely Rainbow Ace from a much higher grade. The colors and inks are outstanding, and the eye appeal is tremendous. Without the aforementioned light folds, the margins would fully support a Gem grade.

1917, $1 United States Note. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65EPQ. Fr-39. . KL-27. A beautiful, fully original Gem with great colors and terrific paper quality. Lot 1764
1862, $2 United States Note. PMG Net About Uncirculated 50. Fr-41. . KL-100. This early Greenback $2 has lovely eye appeal, but as noted by PMG there is a tape repaired edge repair near the bottom left corner. In addition, a few closed pinholes are noticed near the center of the note and are mentioned purely for accuracy. This piece could prove quite a bargain, as it offers a great "look" for what could prove to be a slightly discounted price.

Lot 1765
1875, $2 United States Note. PCGS Very Choice New 64. Fr-44. . KL-104. This beautiful Deuce is blessed with great colors, terrific original paper quality, and margins that, although not even, are above average for the type. It lacks the "PPQ" designation only because of a single, well hidden pinhole near the bottom center of the design. This is a slightly scarcer Fr. number, particularly in high grades, as PCGS Currency has graded just two pieces in this grade with only three examples (all 65Ppqs) finer. Only about 80 examples are known in all grades combined.

Lot 1766
1880, $2 United States Note. PCGS Choice About New 58PPQ. Fr-52. . KL-112. This well-centered $2 has all the margins, colors, and eye appeal for a Gem grade, but alas the graders at PCGS Currency located a hidden bend that limits the technical grade. This piece may help prove what many experienced collectors and dealers have long realized, often true both with coins and currency: that a choice AU example with above average eye appeal may sell for as much (or even more) than the same item in techincal uncirculated grades such as 61, 62, or even 63. Expect this note to exceed our likely conservative estimate, as technical grade is often secondary to aesthetic appeal.

Lot 1771
1862, $5 United States Note. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65EPQ. Fr-61a. . KL-190. This Legal $5 possesses remarkable face margins that are totally out of line for what are normally seen on this type. They are broad all the way around, and fully frame the design in a way that is seldom seen on this often tightly margined design. The grade appears to have been somewhat "netted" due to some very minor corner and edge handling, which might be regarded as trivial by many experts on this early type, as the margins and centering alone would fully support a slightly higher grade. It is fully original, with bold embossing evident through the holder, and the colors are as sharp and bold as the day it was printed. An exemplary note worthy of attention from any type note collector.

In fact, after close inspection this cataloger cannot locate the reason why the experts at PMG chose this grade; undoubtedly a hidden fold appeared to them in a vision. For what it's worth, it's listed as "CU" in the Gengerke census and certainly has every bit the aesthetic merit of notes graded higher numerically. No matter the techincal grade, this note is worth every bit of our perhaps conservative estimate, and is likely to see spirited bidding before the hammer falls.
