  Miscellaneous, Lot of Eight Typed Letters Sent to the Consignor. These letters are more than meet the eye at first glance. Included are letters from George Bush (1976 on CIA letterhead stationery), George Bush (1991 on White House letterhead stationery with handwritten postscript), John Wayne (undated on personal stationery), Gerald Ford (1982 on personal stationery), Richard Nixon (1982 or personal stationery with long handwritten postscript note), Jimmy Carter (1982 on personal letterhead stationery), Richard Nixon (1974 on White House stationery - Secretarial autograph), and Ronald Reagan (1982 on White House stationery - Autopen). The subjects of these letters range from congratulations to Deke on his retirement from NASA to talk about Deke's atrial fibrillation and thanks for pictures. A nice lot matched in blue matting and gold metal frames. These were hung in Deke's den and were among his most prized possessions. Worth a close look.

Miscellaneous, "Deke Slayton's Author's Files. Deke was involved with two books: "Deke! US Manned Space from Mercury to the Shuttle" with Michael Cassutt (1994) and "Moon Shot / The inside story of America's Rare to the Moon" (1994)with fellow astronaut Alan Shepard (1994). This lot includes the authors publishing contracts, correspondence, text revisions, proofs, a just a mass of paper associated with these books. If ever you wanted to know the "nuts and bolts" involved with putting together a book, this pile will at least give you an idea of the number of trees killed just in the back and forth of the behind the scenes. An interesting look behind the curtain.

Lot of three different including a white nylon windbreaker (size "L") with small chest patch and large back patch and signed, in red, on the left chest area in red. A fascinating group including a 237pp typed manuscript of "It is I, Seagull", the story of Valentina Tereshkova by Mitchell R. Sharpe with glued in corrections (this is the author's most well-known book), Chapters 18 ("V-2s in the Desert") and 19 ("Thrust into Space" - 94pp combined) of a typed manuscript with handwritten ink notations AND Chapters 1-3 of his book "Rendezvous at Reutte" with handwritten pencil notations AND two folders of his correspondence with former team members which the author used to confirm the information in the book. An important lot.

Lot of two wooden/metal plaques including one that is engraved with the Award certificate for Deke's Distinguished Service Award (13x17") and an unusual one that lists all of the US Manned spaceflights and crews from Alan Shepard's Mercury III flight in 1961, through the Apollo 11 flight of Apollo 11 in 1969. These are listed against the famous Earthrise photo taken by Apollo 8. ALSO included is a framed copy of the US, Russian/Great British "Space Treaty of 1966. An unusual and fascinating trio.

  Miscellaneous, Balance of the Deke Slayton Estate Collection. A diverse lot that includes 1) A FILLED "Jim Beam" (?) Apollo 11 decanter on stand, 2) a 3-D metal/glass commemorative tombstone from the Design South company in appreciation for their having had the opportunity to participate in the design, construction and management of the US Astronaut Hall of Fame, 3) a 1962 West Side Association of Commerce, Inc medallion (in clear lucite) that is inscribed on the reverse: "Presented to NASA in recognition of Distinguished Service to the Nation, 4) a small wood/metal shield presented to "Major D. K. Slayton / Checkout 1 Oct 1963 / T-38 Talon / Ellington AFB / Northrop Corp", 5) a Project Gemini glass ashtray showing the Gemini target vehicle flying over a distorted version of Florida. There is a metal "DS" initial plaque added at the bottom, 6) a wooden baton (12x1.5") with a metal plaque that reads: "Massed in Mid-Air by members of the U.S. Army Parachute Team / Golden Knights, etc. ALSO included are two empty Russian liquor (?) bottles, a Russian metal tube filled with food (?) or maybe glue and a 1989 "We, the People" calender inscribed and signed at the bottom by John Glenn. A diverse and interesting lot.

An interesting lot of odds and ends including 1) a cassette tape of the original Mercury Astronaut's Press Conference, 2) a cassette tape of the ASTP Reception, 3) two cassettes marked "Russian 36-41" and "48-54" (language studies?), 4) a NASA "D. K. Slayton" card desk name plate, 5) a 1991 Jimmy Doolittle Fellow award from the Aerospace Education Foundation of the Air Force Association, 6) a black and white photo of Doolittle with an autograph on the reverse (his?), 7) a 1995 handwritten note from Wally Schirra to Bobbie Slayton, 8) a gold colored Russian medallion and 9) a 1991 Reno Air Races money clip engraved "N.C.A.R. / Reno 1991 / Pilot" and the initials "D. K.S." An interesting lot in fairly good condition.

Aviation, 1982-1990, Deke Slayton's Private Pilots Log (8x4") This hard cover pilots log has about 40+ pages filled out with hand-written notes. He has signed 11 separate pages and flown a number of types of aircraft. This log goes to show, you can take a man out of the plane, but you can't take the plane out of the man. Once a pilot, always a pilot.

Lot of seven plus, author-signed/inscribed space books including "Prelude to the Space Age / The Rocket Societies" by Frank Winter (1983), Wernher von Braun by Stuhlinger and Ordway (1994), "The Impact of Air Power" by Emme, "An American in Exile / The Story of Arthur Rudolph" by Thomas Franklin (1987), two different Robert Goddard Historical Essay Award Plaques (1969, 1976) presented to Mitchell Sharpe by the National Space Club and including a typed 1969 letter by the Governor of Alabama congratulating the consignor for the Award, an IBM transistor embedded in a lucite paperweight, a James Irwin autographed lunar surface lithograph and a Skylab-1 crew-signed crew lithograph, a small piece of the metal Redstone gantry launch tower that was used in 1958 to launch America's first satellite (Redstone I) in its original plastic box with provenence of the Curator of the Air Force Space Museum and a color "Robert Goddard at his Launch Tower in Mescalero Ranch, Roswell, New Mexico, August 1940" presentation photo. An interesting and attractive lot in generally fine condition.
